07 GTB HID xenon light not working

Postby dr20t » Wed Aug 08, 2012 11:31 pm

In a bit of a rut guys and would appreciate any advice - As topic states, my 07 gtb xenon driver's side headlight stopped working a couple of days ago

Some of you may know this but i transported the 07 GTB front end (including entire wiring harness) into my 04. This is done properly with all standard relays and sensors converted over too.

Checked the globe - its fine - and i tested it in the passenger side assembly and it works

Checked all fuses and relays - theyre all fine

Tested the circuit with a multimeter and earth \ power \ trigger is there in the plug (although dont know if there;s a break in the circuit somewhere between the plug and the globe)

Im thinking it may just be the ballast but is this common for them to fail? Thankfully I have a spare one from the parts car but dont know the condition of that as this was the headlight that was smashed up in the accident (also scored a free xenon bulb out of this which I didnt realise was still in there - thats a nice cool 200 bucks worth of globe ! :D )

Any help would be greatly appreciate guys - thanks in advance

Mick

Cheap ballasts on those HID kits off eBay almost always fail before the bulb itself. Although I'd imagine Subaru uses good components which are less likely to fail, but it's still possible. No idea where the ballasts are but it should be as simple as checking if there's 12V going to it when the lights are on or not, to make sure it's the ballasts...

I suspect the ballast is at fault, that or a wiring loose somewhere

Thanks fellas -

how do i test the ballast itself? its hard to get to without removing the front bar as its under the headlight - is there any other wire i can test coming out of it?

I have no problem taking it all apart to change it but just dont want to go through the hassle of it if i can isolate the problem

check the resistance of your ballast
should be about 3 ohms for 50 watt power output using ohms law

Or a Garbo!

Ok so I tried testing the ballast - no go cos I need to get the headlight off to do it, which means bumper bar off
. Will be doing this tonight and see how it goes

Went for a fifteen min drive to pick something up earlier (Parkers work and had my foglights on for visibility)

Maybe it's cos it's at fore of mind, but in that fifteen minutes I saw eleven cars with at least one headlight out. One even had both out

Two of the eleven were gen 4 libs - both were silver, one was a Gt.

Paint your car red, that'll fix it  and everyone knows red goes faster.

Took the ballast off today. Was corroded to buggery. Must have been water damaged from previous life and gradually deteriorated.

Problem I now have is pulling the entire headlight apart to be able to change the ballast , as the power wires are internally wired into the ballast and thus the terminal needs to come out too

Yep have pics will upload once my laptop is discharged from it's current duy ;)

Having changed ballasts over last night I can only say what a p.I.t.a that was - took about four or five hours to do properly and realign the headlight.

All fixed now and applied some high temp sealer to a few places on the headlight to mitigate against any future water damage
