Sticky Clutch

Postby Jack_Keaka » Wed Feb 01, 2012 5:31 pm

Hey guys, so i had my clutch and flywheel replaced in late december.
now when it gets hot or on long drives the clutch gets 'sticky'. when it gets real hot (traffic, heavy amount of clutch riding) it sticks in permanently for a few seconds. its really frustrating! also when i start it up of a morning its quite noisy until it gets warm. Gets louder when the A/C is turned on. ill put up a video when the rain stops and the car is cold. i have checked the fluid levels when the clutch isn't engaged and it seems full.
does anyone have any ideas what it could be? also does anyone recommend any where i can get this looked at in sydney? any positive experiences? or even bad ones, places to avoid?
Thanks in advance for any help. -Jack

Did they change the clutch master cylinder when you had the other clutch work done?

My clutch pedal was playing up... I took it to the mechanics and it was a faulty Master Cylinder. Got them to replace it and everything was fine then started to experience the exact symptoms you mentioned... much like clutch slip.

Turns out that the new master cylinder was the issue. My mechanics managed to rectify it and it drives fine now.

Take it back to the guys that did your clutch, they should have some sort of guarantee that their workmanship is top notch & will attempt to fix it to claim back their reputation.

yeah don't think they did work on the master cylinder. where is the master cylinder located? all i know is that it turns foot pressure into hydraulic pressure or something like that. i don't really want to go back to where i got it done because i wasn't happy going there to begin with but had no choice as when the clutch blew it was un-drivable. (lube mobile) kinda want a specialist. i don't care that i have to pay as long as its not too much. I'm expecting no more than $400-$500, anymore than that (not including parts) and I'm sure they're just ripping me off.
Also does anyone know if my car would have dual mass flywheel? i assume it would

Yes, if its the standard flywheel its dual mass and could be part of the sticking problem. Replacing with a solid mass flywheel is the best thing you can do with this model. Pretty much the springs in the dual mass flywheel get clogged up and there is just too many moving parts in it. I did this on my rx and it was a big improvement!

Good luck with it all! :)

cheers mate, i will definitely have a chat to the mechanic and see what the best option is with it. i still haven't gone to get it looked at cause I've had 0 time but i have some days off up my sleeve next week. is single mass cheaper or more expensive?

never fixed it. but what happened was, i was on a cruise with the fellas and i went to take off at the lights (not hard just normal) and it made a loud thud/bang and the car stalled, hasn't been sticky since. really weird but that seemed to have fixed it. still doesn't feel great when i give it the beans but as long as it works fine now i don't really care.

That's pretty much the verdict that I came too also after many people suggesting that. Also it has been suggested it is just the hydraulic thingy (technical jargon I know) that the actual pedal uses may have air in it, meaning when it get heated, the air becomes more compressible, making the pedal stick in. If that makes sense?
