Fuel Consumption on 3.0

I've used 91, 94(bio), 95 and 98 and, to be honest, have not noticed any difference in the couple of months I've been driving this beast. I am consistently getting 9.4l/100km over an extended period.

There are times when that drops to under 8 on the freeway and climbs to over 10 around the city and the hills but once I get back to my home territory it's back to 9.4 again. It's more than what I'm used to as this is my first 6 cylinder car but is in the range of what I was expecting.

I'll keep experimenting with different fuels for a little longer but the accountant in me is saying that there is bugger-all in it and certainly not enough to justify the price difference. The same thing happened with the last car I had.

I've used 91 on occasions and it doesn't seem to affect economy or power. Funny thing is, the only time I've heard any pinging from the engine is when I've had a full tank of 95 or 98. It doesn't seem to ping on 91 which is contrary to what I thought.

I still use 95 the most though as I don't want to damage any components - probably more of an irrational fear than a fact... Sometimes in Perth though it's more than $0.15 per litre difference from 91 to 98.

Cool. All sorts of things can affect economy though apart from driving. Like, carrying lots of weight in the car, soft tyres #, spark plugs overdue, squashed or otherwise blocked exhaust components, other tuning items like cold start settings, faulty components like oxygen sensors, crank angle sensors etc. Perhaps a full tune and ECU code check would be good money spent. 4l/100km extra could equal more than $1000 a year in fuel costs.

# i generally run 35-36 psi. One test is on a flat and level surface push the car in neutral engine off. It should keep rolling a meter or more after you stop pushing otherwise rolling resistance is involved somewhere. this is usually either soft tyres or poor front alignment.

I'll be curious to see if your current air filter is dirty! Also blitzen makes some good points, keep those all in mind. Also have a look at your exhaust tips - if they're all sooty and black it could be a sign of running rich which is never good for fuel consumption.

ok, replaced air filter, and i know its a bit too early to call it a success but average consumption has had a massive drop! already dropped down to 13-12L/100k...and yeah, the old filter looked fairly dirty! the hose clamp from the air filter box was also fairly loose...no idea why, but we tighten it up. ill contuine to run 98 and do alittle more driving and see if i can get it lower!

Some may argue that they feel the difference between 95 and 98RON fuels but the main benefit is that the additives in the 98 help to keep the injectors, valves and head clean of combustion build up which in turn makes the engine run better and give better economy.

95 is the recommended fuel for the H6, but it will run on 91 happily enough. 98 is what is required if you have a custom tune done.

alrighty, just a report from the problem i thought i had before with my auto 3.0r.

filled her all the way up with 98, been driving around for the past few weeks and the trip computer is showing 355kms with another 50kms to go till empty.

ive just pretty much been doing suburb driving, so im happy to see im matching fuel comsuption with other people here. car is thirsty, but im happy paying for it with the quality of drive it offers. love it!!!

So a total distance of 405km on a tank of 98? I'm getting over 600km on 91 with a third of my bumper missing from the roo strike - true, mine is mainly country driving but a 50% improvement on a lower octance fuel with a less-than-ideal, non-aerodynamic bumper?

Surely, there must be something more to it.

from a few freeway runs the car really does seem to favour high, constant speeds for a lot less fuel comsuption...and to be fair im not the lightest on the accelerator to get up to speed!

Yeah I knew my wifes car would be thirsty before I bought it but I rekon it was one of the safest most affordable sedans I could have bought for 20 grand. Plus dead sexy, pretty quick stock, leather, sunroof, nice sound system, 6 speed, awd, liked the stock rims, cheap insurance the list goes on

I've found that the fuel consumption figures on the multi function display aren't 100% accurate. My figures indicated an average of 11.4L/100km but after calculating my distance driven divided by how many litres were put in, it worked out to be 10.7L/100km. I have calculated it a few times and sometimes it's more accurate, being only 0.4L off the actual figure.

Eg. 49L/459km x 100 = 10.67L/100km.
