Replacing plastic under driver's side mirror

Postby gloryboy » Sat Jun 16, 2012 12:29 pm

Hey guys,

The plastic on my side mirror was slightly damaged a little while ago, and now I can see water building up in the plastic underneath the mirror (where the indicator globe is)

Can someone please tell me how I can pop this plastic off, or if there are any hidden screws that I should know about?

Cheers!

Hi mate no screws at all.

The face of the mirror pops off held on by clips I think four or five of them.

It took me hours to work it out with a torch.

I took to Subaru and within five mines both sides off with a special tool they use for mirrors.!!

Never heard of a special mirror tool...

The colour coded plastic bit pops off, just get a tiny screw driver and GENTLY lever around the edge, working your way around evenly.
There will now be 2 screws exposed holding the indicator assembly in place, undo them. BEFORE removing it there is a third screw, behind the mirror down the bottom, this can be undone with the mirror in place, just be gentle. the indicator assembly should now come out, just unplug the connector and then you can replace it :)
Built not bought, it's a way of life.

Glory boy dont do it with a screw driver you will damage plastic edges. Subaru did have a special tool as i watched them.

Take it to them no more than ten mins.

I'm not sure if I need to replace the same part here as the casing under my mirror is cracked. I have attached a picture of where the damage is.

I have been to Subaru to try and get a replacement part and its $644 for this plastic surround as its actually part of the whole mirror.

could anyone tell me if what Subaru is telling me is correct, the damaged plastic surround is actually part of the whole mirror casing?!

drops is correct. i just pulled apart my mirrors to black out the chrome behind the lense (not as easy as i thought) and it took exactly 2 mins to pull it apart, as he said.
