Exhaust/Mufflers for 3RB - other questions

Hi guys,

Let me just start this off by saying I've used the search feature and read through almost all of the threads related to installing exhaust/muffler on the 3RB.

While I've certainly learned alot, I'm still not quite clear on a few questions and here they are:
1. What does the term 'droning' mean? Is that related to the note produced by the mufflers or is that related to loss of torque?
2. Since I'm based in Sydney, Hi-Tech and TCPAutos seem to be the most obvious choice here for a quad muffler set up. Has anyone here gone with them recently? How much is the whole package including installation?
3. Would swapping a set of mufflers void the subaru warranty?
4. If I'm only swapping the mufflers and not doing any performance tune at all - would this cause any power degradation to the stock set up?

What I'm after is a set of quads that give a nice distinct low tone which I know the Hi-Techs and TCPs can provide.

drone is the sound it makes, usually more noticeable when cruising along the highway or if you plant your foot down in 5th gear at 1500rpm. it can be rather annoying. changing out mufflers probably wont give you too much drone, if any at all. if you went straight pipes from cat-back, no resonators or mufflers then you would get more drone. its hard to describe. just look out for any ricebox POS running a 4" catback on a small n/a engine and listen to the shitty sound they make

people have gone with hitech in the past but consensus was they are rather overpriced and better options out there. TCP quads are definitely the ones to go for at the moment! or if you stumble upon a second hand set of PHAT quads theyre also highly recommended. installation you just need to find someone with a jack, its a simple bolt on job for tcp/hitech/phat quads. would take all of about ten mins

not sure. just swap them back if anything goes wrong before you take it in to subaru

you likely wont notice any differences. not worth a tune just for muffler change

Thanks heaps mate!!! I noticed that you are a proud owner of a 3RB too. Did you change you mufflers to quads? I'm trying hard to find sound clips of 3RBs with ONLY the mufflers changed but it's hard to tell from the youtube videos. Would be good to know if any of the forum 3RB owners here had ONLY their mufflers changed and what's the sound like?

It sounds good. Not loud at all just a slight note coming from the back on full throttle and a bit in start up

thanks mate. do you know of any link to the actual sound clip? can't seem to find. Last I checked on TCP's vendor thread quite a number of people are still waiting for the sound clip.

I've looked through this before but couldn't find any of them that specifically said only the mufflers were changed. I think most probably the full exhaust system.

What do you reckon this would be:

the quads look like TCPs...but the sound is awesome! I'm looking for something like that if possible but I think most likely a full exhaust change? What do you reckon?

I'm in a similar situation, mostly having a look at mufflers at the moment. Pretty keen on a set of TCP ones, nick posted his vid a couple of days ago in the TCP sales forum.

Just changing the rear mufflers gives you very little extra Kw's, it's only the sound that will change so a tune is not required.

The Hi-Techs will give you a nice little "gurgle" exhaust sound, not noisy at all and very easy to live with. The X-Force system is louder across the rev range, just ask "twinturbosubaru" as he has these fitted.

If I was you I would do the whole system using Tim's Raptor headers, better cats and a custom rear section using maybe Phat mufflers (if they still are available) or Hi-Techs for the rear. The gains are greater and for the cost a better bang for you buck than just changing the rear mufflers

Incidently I have an early set of Hi-Techs, the cannon style tip ones and I'm really happy with them.

What would the whole system be worth excluding the mufflers as I have already Hi Techs mufflers.
So the Raptor headers and all the other goodies.
I've have just read the gains and I am very keen.

Remember that you need to buy 2 x cats as the Raptor headers don't include them.

The rough maths for that is $2300, its a lot of benefit when in the past you consider that the exhaust alone from K2 was a bunch more $$ on its own

I have been considering how we can do it cheaper for a full system however most people like to piece together there own "hot ticket" system so I may just keep doing the headers only. Same with Cats, they can develop issues and I rather you be hassling someone else other than me if/when they go bad, local muff ship is best on this matter
