to put it in perspective, these were on the same day but tuned using different dynos

gambits car 305awkw 12.46sec @112mph, .75 rt, 2.07 60ft, 1/8mile 8.25@90.05mph springys roller dyno
my car 275awkw 12.75sec @11.52, 1.31rt, 1.97 60ft, 1/8mile 8.32@86.99mph rev zones hub dyno

we will see how bruces and mine go on a roller dyno on dyno day ;)

Ah if only my was not in car heaven :( would have been good to strap the two cars on the same dyno day.

Here you go big G..

The blue plot is an alternative map that is in progress which has less boost but more timing.

The yellow plot is the current map on my car.

Makes boost nice and early ur on full boost while I'm at 5psi on mine lol

How did u choose what map u wanted? And why isn't the other map with more timing/less boost finished?

Wow those graphs look identical to mine (obviously peak power is lower by 9kw atw) - keep in mind mine is a two litre and auto though and was tuned on roller dyno so the readings are different but just eerily similar looking graphs!

Exact same power at 3000 up to 4500 then you make slightly more at 5000 then again at peak.

Boost curve again similar with only difference being I'm on 18.5psi at 3000 and 19.2 at peak 4400 flatlining Until my torque convertor shits itself at 5500. Seems the 3 port holds boost relatively well ! And the vf52 is no slouch in the mid range !

Interesting thing for me would be throttle response off boost - how do you find that Bruce? And similarly if on full boost and you roll off the accelerator and back on again, how does it respond?

I asked Craig for the following.

18psi boost supposedly the efficiency range of the VF52 is 17-18psi.
AFRs to be set to 11.5 which he actually set to 11.25 as it offered a little more safety.

The car was then dyno tuned with a knock link and produced 215kws.

He then took it off the dyno and logged it on the road with the knock link.

Then back on the dyno following adjustments where he backed it off as there was very little safety and then produced the final figure of 207kws.

With regards the other map Craig had a bit of a go at producing an alternative map with less boost and more timing. He didn't spend much time with it as he wanted to deliver what I had asked for. He did say he reckons he could get very close to the 207kw figure by tweaking the tune with less boost too. Will see what I do following the dyno day.

So far the car has been brilliant to drive.

Mick

Mick off boost throttle response is much better than it was prior to this tune. And rolling off the accelerator and back on did not produce any stutter, jerkiness or flat spot. I just tried that on the way back from the WRX club meet whilst having fun with some of the boys.

Interesting also on our graphs being similar. How would you describe your tuner and the quality of your tune.

I'm really happy that this time my car was road tuned as well to ensure what the dyno showed was also trialled and adjusted for the road.

If your down in Melbourne at any stage you can drive it and let me know what you think.

For the money I've spent I reckon I got great bang for buck.

thanks bruce - thats great about throttle response

i also appreciate the offer to drive (too generous of you !) but i have a rule - i dont drive another man's modified car - many thanks anyway

In terms of my tuner \ tune - cannot fault it at all. Especially given the auto being the limiting factor - a great drive and very linear not on\off aggresive like alot of the tuned cars ive been in.

I agree with the performance mods \ budget you have done well

I'll be candid about my costs as a comparison:

- 3" TBE - $1,500 custom made with 200 cel cat and redback mufflers initially (now changed to TCP quads for cosmetics only)
- Walbro 265lph pump - $250
- Turbo - $1350 brand new delivered (Garrett GT2871R dual ball bearing, v band outlet, 0.60 compressor with 3" inlet, 0.64 rear housing)
- Turbo fittings - $250
- Gaskets etc- $100
- FMIC \ Piping - $800
- EVC6 Boost controller - $600
- Turbosmart Type 3 BOV - $100 second hand
- Injectors \ billet rails \ lines - $1650 (braided lines and speedflow fittings for safety - couldve gone without these and saved 500 but worth it i think)
- 38mm Tial External Wastegate - $350
- "Mines" Up-pipe - $200
- FPR - $200
- Intake - $350
- Catch Can \AOS - $200
- Misc mods to fit - $200
- Tune - 850

TOTAL: $9,000 excluding labour

Of the above i probably didnt "need" :

- EBC, but again for the future mods i was always planning (above 25psi) its a worthy investment
- Braided lines \ billet rails \ speedflow fittings - for the sake of 500 bucks it was important to me
- External gate - again for future mods

So as a comparison your bits and pieces worked out very well for the cost involved

Keen to see development in the secondary map with lower boost \ more timing in future

Cheers

Mick

sweet,

why did you want it kept at 11.5? mine tappers down to 10 at red line which i think is a fraction rich but they set it at whats safe, i let them do there stuff with my car all i wanted was it boosted lol which still after 2 visits we still have issues!!!

Well, I had taken advice from many WRX and Legacy/Liberty owners who are running this turbo. Quite a few also road tune their own cars. They've done the research.

For the VF52 from these guys trial and error it's most efficient between 17-18psi. And ideally AFR's should head towards 11.5

My requested settings were from chatting with about 10 odd people who own cars with this turbo who both track cars and have good reliable cars making good power.

I thought I'd have a crack and see how I like it.

The VF52 at 18 is probably at the top of its efficiency looking that the graph. Though this does show maintainence of 18psi as constant and I did ask to taper beyond 5500RPM to 15-16psi. Again this is only from information from people I've spoken to. If this had been done I reckon the car would pull all the way to the redline.

Will keep working with Craig and tweak this a bit I reckon when I'm next in installing the AOS.

This will be after dyno day though.

so 18 is the max u could safley run with this turbo? why did you want it to tapper at 5500? is there an issue with the turbo running out of puff and intake temps rising?

the more times they play with it the better
