Exhuast Manifold.

Postby kiahatsiu » Fri Apr 13, 2012 10:34 am

Good day,
Sitting here in my office in PNG killing time and got to thinking about changing to an after market exhaust manifold. I realise it is pissing into the wind a little on an unopened 2.0, but it is pretty much the only bolt on thing that remains somewhat standard on my car. Well, to my knowledge it is off a wrx and it went on when my VF34 went on during power hunt mkI, and not an equal length stock one.
As mentioned in a few other posts it is likely that I will go a with a built 2.5 bottom end in the future, with a mild tickle of the stock dual AVCS heads and some 264ish cams, so if I was to change the hedders now I would still use them in the future.

So, in short, worth doing, and which ones?

Oh, and in my head the answer is "yes." I imagine it would allow for slightly better spool up and a stronger top end.

Hey Ian

Some have used the kando equal length headers recently with some success although to be honest i dont know how long these may last.

Tomei xpreme are another option for off the shelf

Why not have one made out of 3040 stainless?

To be honest im thinking of going the other way - ie from equal length to unequal length when i go the 2.5 - i want that rumble and willing to sacrifice a poofteenth of a few kw's for the sound (which i will make up by boosting the prick to within an inch of its life :) )

Was even considering doing this swap next weekend but confirmed i would have to get rid of my Mines up-pipe im currently using if i was to do that which makes it a little bigger job than initially thought

PS pm me about the other thing

Mick,
I was thinking the Tomei ones, seem like a good product. The only drama is that i am not sure they clear the sump on the ej20y. I have read a few other sets of headers (namily GTspec or what ever they are) need to have the oil pan changed to the 2.5 one. So, logically, I emailed the other Michael.

As for having ones made, I would love to go down that route, but my fabricator/mechanic of choice is currently busy wedging 1gz-ge with turbos into anything that sits in his workshop.

What type of numbers are you going for? When I did my build a few months ago Phat said not to worry about extractors as the stock ej208 ones are fine for anything around the 200atw mark. I am also thinking of going UEL ones as I want the burble, but don't want to my top end. If aftermarket EL extractors will result in more power and better spool up then I better go shopping.
Ideas on how much the Tomie ones go for? Wanting to stay with the more well know brands, or might get quoted on some custom ones but I'm thinking that would be expensive? :(

I would be hoping for over 200 at the wheels, but it makes what it makes. A lot of places have the Tomei ones for $1000-1100 at the moment. They would be up the top of my list. I am waiting to hear back from Phat, and if he has any he recommends/vends. If he say not worth it then it is just a matter of changing my injects, giving it a good service and chucking it on the strainers.
