Buying a Liberty GT in Sydney.

G'Day All,

I have made a quick introduction in the intro section, but to cut it short, I'm in the market for an 08-09 gen 4 Liberty GT.

Almost all of my previous cars have been European(Fiat Punto Sport JTD and a Skoda Octavia vRS Turbo), and to be honest they were great cars, but getting long in the tooth by the time I unloaded them at around 100,000km. I had always immaculately maintained them though.

So far I am smitten with what the Liberty GT has to offer, and am in the hunt for a good one. But sadly I have been to see six of them so far, and six of them have been rooted. They have all so far been an equal mix of sedans and wagons, auto and manual. But they have all shown signs of careless maintenance (ie uneven tyrewear, engine rattles, scratched/deeply worn leather, incomplete service history, and in one case a cracked rear lower wishbone that the bloke tried to blame on me! (I hadent even driven the car, needless to say I thanked him for his time and walked away...). Just in general I felt as though the cars condition just didnt match the kilometers. I figure if my own car looked better with double the km's, I'm not expecting too much or am I?

I'd prefer a Wagon, Manual, sub 70,000km, FSH and not treated like a theme park ride (definately hard to find)

But really, the one I am pretty keen to get to check out is this one here, would it be worth the extra coin over say the 2.0 litre autos above? (I am thinking yes, but I am uneducated to be honest)

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated, but in the meantime im going to keep looking, eventually one will arrive on the scene with the right mix........

Something to do with I asked if he could back the car off the slope it was parked on, and onto level ground so I could slide underneath to check out the drive boots. As he was reversing, he dropped a wheel off the gutter, and he blamed me for the noise it made, and the crystal clear crack in the wishbone.

Needless to say this bloke was a parrot.

But I do understand that I am quite meticulous when it comes to the subject of buying a car, I wont however make apologies where my 30 grand is concerned...... Ive been reading that some other blokes have inspected up to 20 different cars before settling on one which meets the right standard, I dont mind being in that category if need be.

And here was me thinking I'd go up to Sydney to find a Car 'cause down here in Victoria there are so few on the market by comparison. You think they've had the gong and they're less than 100,000km? Bit depressing really I could be searching for some time.

Try coming over to Adelaide. I waited about 12 months to find my GT and was about to travel over to vic for a few

Definitely spend the extra and find a GT-B.
You would be hard pressed in finding a GT with less than 70k on the clock.

I'd sell my sedan manual GT-B now for $30k and buy that manual GT-B Wagon if I was able too, as I originally wanted a manual wagon but couldn't find one. lol


Key is, just have to wait and be patient. Took me 4 months of so of solid searching before I found my beauty.

I had to get my GTB from Melbourne.

I just couldn't get a GTB Wagon in Sydney under $30K with less than 100,000km on it.

I really wanted an STI version but couldn't justify the extra $6-7K asking price (i saw one STI wagon that was asking as high as $50K).

I eventually got my 07 GTB for $26,500 in Melbourne. The wheels were all scratched badly and it had a few dints.

I got brand new factory B spec wheels for $500 and had the dents pulled out. It looked and drove like new and only had 78,000kms.

My recommendation is get the 2.5L Turbo versions (MY06 onwards), it had a lot of improvements over the 2.0L turbo models.

If you wait long enough, the right one will come along.

I'm in the same boat. It seems these cars are quite thin on the ground.

Looking for a 2008 GT Spec.B or Tuned by STi. Prefer manual, though will settle for an auto if I have to. Really after a wagon rather than a sedan.

The wagons are definitely harder to find and most of them are autos.

The Autos are OK but if i had my time again, i would definitely go the manual and preferrably an STI version (the paddle shifts are still pretty fun on the auto).

My previous car was a Ford FG XR6 turbo and it had the brilliant ZF 6 speed auto as standard (leaves the subie 5 speed auto for dead).

My goal is to pay off my GT and give it to the wife to ferry the kids around, then i get something a bit more sportier and serious (STI, EVO, FPV or R35 etc)!

I got mine from Sydney around 9 months ago with around 85000 on it. It has a fair few very minor stone chips, but they are hard to see on the silver. Other than that the only damage is scrapes under the front bar and ALL rims scratched up.
Seems someone couldn't park.
I would rather not-shit rims but I'm changing them anyway and I got a decent price.

Mechanically it is in great shape though.

Just have to play the waiting game.

Just bought a "new" demo 2011 Lib GT wagon (auto) in Tassie.... $50k + duty (then adjusted for prior lease payout gaps).

They have a sedan with STi lips etc left from 2011...... same price.

Happy with that, as I'm now doing 3000km a month for work (and I want something that will not spend too long on the worng side of the dotted white line overtaking).

Only got it last night.
