I went a slightly different route here, but achieved the same result - see pic in introductions under my name, from 2008. I prefer to mount the plate on 4 holes, not just 2, so I make a 6mm marine ply plate to suit 4 holes in the plate, then put 2 c/sunk holes in it such that the plate centered vertically on the bar, and (as its a small plate) it doesnt hang into the air intake.
The rear plate std mount also irritated me (on wagon rear door), as every time I shut it the plate mount shakes and dings the panel. Same logic as front plate , except its on a 5mm alloy plate, with mounting holes low (plate high) so the load is centered vertically. Plate is secured with 4 screws again. Original attempt used 15mm wood plate, but with it high it made releaseing the tailgate difficult.
Will have to look at this method in alloy.....and screws top and bottom.
