Project Veloci

Postby MH3.0R » Mon Jul 18, 2011 9:47 pm

Well, I was "outed" tonight so I thought it was better to come clean. I have acquired and installed a Raptor SC Kit as the Engine Development Phase of Project Veloci. Stay tuned later in the week for a long post to identify the full development since taking ownership in 2004.

I chose the name of the project, "Veloci" as the other half of VelociRaptor, a small but fast dinosaur killer! Defined in wikipedia as a "Swift Seizer".

Opening your bonnet in front of 10 other Lib owners might have had something to do with it. :)

This things going to be lil ripper - suits the name beautifully.

Sorry Gambit, by the time you arrived we had done all the under bonnet stuff. And anyway, when we saw what was under yours, well....why would we bother. Your numbers are awesome.

I suppose Velociraptor is the cunning little swifty from Jurassic Park. As I already have the Raptor under the bonnet, I am now working on the Veloci part! :)

Ok, development activities since expiry of new vehicle warranty starting in Nov 2007:

1. V-tune = 10% power and torque improvement along with fuel economy
2. Resonatorectomy = no power gain, no torque gain, but open ended filter box = induction noise gain (personal preference) but closed it up after one month.
3. Quad tip HKS Mufflers = 3kw atw power, hard to detect torque, and noise, well again personal preference. Under mild throttle settings, sounds like an old Holden six (dissappointed with that), but under wide open throttle, now I'm in love again!!!
4. Interior LEDs (Puddle Lamps, Main Cabin Light, Front Map Lights, Parkers, Rear Stops, Reversing)
5. Custom Grille job - Much fun and learned alot (I learned about fibreglassing, finishing, spray putty and spray painting having never done these before).
6. Pedders XA coilovers - Never had coilovers before, but car handling is much flatter in the corners. Firmer ride (not appreciated by the missus), more road noise.
7. Phats Front Lower Control Arm Bushes - Significant improvement in steering response, but also more road noise.
8. HR-472 wheels, +45 offset, 19x8, with 225/35 Kuhmo KU31 rubber. Did not fit without rolling the guards, raised the car by 1cm (compared to the lowered setting from Pedders). I will be sticking to +55 offset for any future wheels, may even go back to 18x8.
9. Applied 3M DiNoc Carbon Fibre look plastic wrap to the chrome gear surround of the auto trans. This would reflect sunlight up under my sunglasses and pi.. me off under some driving conditions.
10. Upgrades Fuel Injectors to STI Blues 565cc (at the same time as the SC Kit)
11. Sard intank Fuel Pump (at the same time as the SC Kit)
12. Raptor SC Kit (the ultimate 3.0R mod) 42% gain in power and torque (you can do the maths yourself). Original engine specs - 180kw and 298Nm + 10% + 42% !!!

13. In process this week:
a. Auto Transmission valve body upgrade (custom job thru HPF and neighbouring auto trans specialist). Mandatory mod for autos and should be done in advance of SC Kit if you have any respect for your transmission.
b. Drive By Wire tuning - currently a little too aggressive and car will not launch at wide open throttle in normal "Drive". (Will launch perfectly with VDC off).
c. Checking the installed position of the filter to ensure reliable filtering between service intervals.

14. Future development:
a. Water To Air (WTA) barrel cooler and heat exchanger. Barrel cooler will mount in the straight section of the charge pipe, heat exchanger will be mounted in the front bar. This will also be a must do in my opinion as the Air Intake Temperatures, even in Melbourne winter, are too high for my comfort. So in summer stop/start conditions.....
b. WTA Jacket cooler for the charger itself. This will improve the charger body and transmission cooling (correct me if I am wrong) and also help to reduce the classic charger whistle. I do not mind the level of whistle that I have in open spaces, but in the concrete car park at my work, it is a concern. Moreover, I am a bit anal about the Air Intake Temps, so additional cooling is on my list of To Do.
c. Might consider an exhaust upgrade to chase a better sound (I still don't like the Holden six sound, looking more for a Porsche flat six sound, AVCS tuning perhaps?)
d. Maybe some more cosmetic stuff like, front lip, fluffy dice and more rice to make me look younger!!! (that should draw some comments)

Anyway, as I have said countless times now, this project is not about chasing numbers. I have more than enough and am now setting about making what I have work reliably.

Any and all comments and advice welcome. I am no expert and do rely on others, so don't be shy, I am eager to learn.

Thanks Gambit. The SC whine under acceleration is not all that evident outside the car, not that I would know. But it is a nice level inside the car. Even the missus commented, "What's that whine sound? That's nice!" That comment brought a nice smile to my face, and it is still there. :D

Glad that this project is not just about numbers on a dyno sheet!

Keeping a eagle eye on this thread as it will inspire me to start my own build!!!
