Take it to a workshop and ask them to check the operation of the knock sensor, the timing advance, and for any codes. If nothing seems to be wrong reset the ecu memory just in case.

Can also check things like the plug gap may be too small causing it to spark early.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be the timing advance cause there is no
dizzy. the liberty has coil packs so theres nothing to adjust there.
I will try and reset the ecu tomorrow by disconnecting the battery.
see how that goes.

Timing is controlled automatically and if the timing belt is out a tooth or two then it can mess with the timing.

That will clear the fault codes and you'll potentially be back to square one, not knowing what's going on. Check the codes, then reset if you can.

Yes, you need an OBD2 scanner tool of sorts. you can grab them cheap off eBay, or as stated, go to a workshop and ask them to check it for you.

Thanks for the reminder - I need to do that on my car later too!

IF the engine light has come on at some stage, you can check. The Onboard Diagnostics System will do what it can to resolve the issue, but it's always good to check the codes.
