Got the shakes....

Postby bigamph » Thu Jun 02, 2011 8:47 am

Ok, I've had my liberty for a year now, and since I can remember its had a shake in the steering wheel, i've had new rims and tyres fitted and while they have helped, it has never been a permanant fix....

Now living where I live I have been lucky enough to collect a pot-hole or 2...

But after every pot-hole episode I've taken my car to get a balance and allignment, a few different places have given me a few different reasons why there is still a shake (some said I buckled a rim, others said the rims are fine)

I do a lot of freeway driving and find that its most noticable around 110km/h

Should the next port of call be to have the suspension looked at?

Cheers guys

I'm going to trust that since you have had new rims and tyres put on, that they have done a correct wheel balance and alignment for you so it can't be that.

I started experiencing this last night on my way home from a cruise also, but i know my reason is due to a lot of mud/dirt caked up on the inside of the rims from when i almost got bogged on dirt-roads the other night. I take it nothing could be caked up on your rims to make them unbalanced?

Other than that, from your description, it doesn't get worse while braking?

I'd suggest probably have your suspension bushes looked at. They could be worn and causing vibration, or it could even be the road! :P I've always had my vibrations fixed after a good alignment and balance, i'm interested to hear some possible causes also....

Sorry i couldn't be of much help.

your wheels may be balanced, but have you ever had the hubs/ discs done?

i got a set of btand new RDA rotors (vented) that were out of balance (casting fault in the air channels) so it acted like the wheels were out of balance.

also look for any signs of damage to the hub-face that may prevent the wheels from seating properly.
and make sure you observe proper tightening of wheel nuts. wheel shops like to go nuts with the rattle gun. when in fact if you ca't undo a wheel nut easily with teh supplied subaru tool (it's about 250mm long) then they are too tight
simple things, but sometimes they are overlooked

I also just got a new set of pads and rotors (dixel)

On the brakes the car is fine, but I will get the hubs checked out too!

whip off tthe rotors and ask a tyre joint to check the balance on them

other than that, start looking at control arm bushes, ball joints, etc

Couldn't agree more. Whenever I get my car back from the shop I undo all the nuts and retorque them to correct spec evenly with a torque wrench. Uneven wheel nuts torque is another common cause of disc thickness variation.

Yeah, had to step on the wheel brace to get the nuts off, when I get home I'll use the torque wrench....
