Warped discs, need new disc/pads combo suggestions

Postby stew07gt » Sun May 15, 2011 5:19 pm

So my brakes are annoying the hell out of me. I had them machined and i put new pads on them about 3000k's ago and theyre back to shaking already.

Im planning to bleed the lines and check everything out, but if that doesnt work can anyone recommend any specific disc/pad combos that arent too expensive, i figured if i have to replace them and theyre not too much more expensive why stick with stock ones?

I was also considering just doing the fronts first, will this affect anything negatively?

I had the same issue. Machined the disks for it to only happen again. Bit the bullet and bought DBA4000s. Great piece of kit. Should be able to get them fairly cheap if you shop around and it is a DIY if you don't mind working the spanners.

Pads wise I've gone the expensive Endless CCAs. Great once up to temp and never fade. Problem is they are a little dusty and squeel. Will soon need to look for replacements so will be hunting around.

If the shuddering came back a fair time after the discs were machined, I'd look at the way in which the brakes are used.

I.e. should be braking firmly, not dragging brakes, not leaving them applied when car is stationary after hard braking sessions etc.

Also check that your brake slider pins are lubricated and not sticking (not all mechanics check this for you when they change pads/rotors). If you have a sticking pin(s) then one or both pads are dragging and ruining your rotors.

Uneven brake deposits on the disc can sometimes be reduced by going through the standard bedding in process again.

Bleeding the fluid is not going to make a difference to your shuddering issue.

Also best to determine if it is your fronts or rears giving you issues before replacing anything. Is the shudder in steering wheel, or only in the chassis of the car?

DBA street series standard rotors are probably on par with OEM rotors but much cheaper. Also I would not recommend OEM pads again you should get something like Remsa Master HPT line (I am v happy with these) or many people on here are happy with Dixcel type M pads (much more expensive). Both pads excellent for daily driving and also for spirited driving.

Personally I'd steer away from Bendix I have ran several of their different models never been that impressed by any of them.

Just to throw a spanner in the works to the above, 3rd car with the same combo and no complaints at all,

I always get RDA rotors, slotted or plain Jane, and Bendix CT series pads.. No probs at all, and less than half the price of DBA.

My B4 running 20psi and modded was always pulled up no problems with the slotted RDA's, after 30k, still no warp.. Was using Bendix ultimates which ate the hell out of them though!
Back to Subaru again.. think I would have learnt my lesson the first time round!

Only way to go is bite the bullet and get Dixcel slotted rotors and M type pads all round. Not the cheapest of options but I've never heard of Dixcel rotors warping + we're talking safety here and should not be skimped on.

I don't think it is the warping so much as the deposits left on the rotor by the brake pads. Slotted rotors is key to evacuating any resin etc.. that may otherwise be deposited on the rotors. I found that this was definitely my issue. I tried re-bedding but did not work. Get a quality set of slotted rotors and you'll be happy.

I've also used RDA as well have been happy with them especially the price. The only downside is that they don't provide painted hubs so you gotta do it yourself unless you want them rusting (not sure if they have changed this lately). Their more expensive gold passivated ones avoid this problem. Where the most expensive rotors come into play is when you go to the track where they have can have better cooling and heat distribution.

yeah, ive looked at slotted 4000 series dba rotors for $340 fronts, and bendix ultimate pads at $150 for fronts. No idea if this is high, as i havent really shopped around yet. I only have one distributor of rda rotors in my area but i think i might have to drop in there tommorow and ask for a price. How much cheaper should i expect them to be? Also, how much should i actually pay for pads... by that i mean how much extra is something like the dixcel type m's?

yep.. still a prob with the surface rust... I know, my discs are 1 month old and are suffering already.. but the braking is gold!

Is that $340 for each disc or for both? If for both, it's a good price. $340 each is high though

Agreed, if it is $340 for both rotors that is a great price.

No thats the price i got quoted each, if it was for both i would have probably ordered them already.

fwiw I got a front set for $234 per rotor from VSport in Jan '09. (being two years old, that info is probably worth less than 2 cents)
