Subaru probably did over 20 runs, each by one or more professional drivers, and posted the fastest run (or they could what Ferrari does and tune their cars prior to the test and claim it was 'stock' numbers). I just find it interesting that their specs show the auto is a whole 1 second slower than the manual. I know the auto loses about 10-15 kw from the torque converter but if it's a whole 1 second, it's a poor auto box they're using.
or a really unsympathetic driver smashing the manual through the gears.

Where are the specs that show the auto is 1 second slower? My sti definitely isn't doing 0-100 in 7 seconds. No matter how much of a general indicator testing it the way I have tested it is, one second is a major difference and it definitely was no where near 7 seconds...

How is it more expensive?

Lighter wheels, BIgger brakes and strut bar surely isn't 15kg?

Could it have been the GenV Subaru GT that you were reading about??

http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=65424&vf=1

"Subaru claims the $54,990 GT auto is eight-tenths quicker than the $52,990 six-speed manual version in the 0-100km/h sprint (6.2 v 7.0sec)"

"The manual gearbox is no longer the way to go with Subaru’s range-topping sports sedan (or wagon)"

The bold and underlined text is the cause of the difference.

For whatever reason car mags these days like to test acceleration figures with a front seat passenger and half tank of fuel. The drivers are usually a bit more sympathetic than the manufacturer pilots and less willing to spend days/weeks getting everything just right for that ultimate figure. On top of that the manufacturer will test with next to no fuel in the tank and only the driver in the car.

Leave it in D? Stall it up rather than slam it into D from neutral?

Subaru's website claims 6.3 for the manual and 6.2 for the auto GenV.

i have always had the belief that an auto fitted car should always be faster than a manual

reason's for this, leaving the line with engine makin boost, better acceloration from a stand still, and less stress on the drive line! this goes out the window when u start changing stall convertors and transbrake and leave the line with 14psi plus before deactivating the transbrake, which in turn pulls the upper control arms out of the floor of you calais :P
