Well in a higher mileage engine when there is more wear, the tolerances in all the moving parts is higher, so oil pressure would naturally drop a little. Makes sense to use a slightly thicker oil in that case, but 50W is pretty high for a slighly-modified daily that's only over 100KKms.

I agree with you Tek, a 50W does seem a little excessive for an engine with that amount of klms. I'd also consider using a 5W-something instead so the oil flows that little bit better upon start up.

10w40 is the best to use IMHO - Mind you, not all companies release their top spec oils in this spec (Mobil & Castrol for example) but running a 5w30 or 5w40 should be also very good.

In the Liberty I was running 10w40 RP & found it to be fantastic... I know a lot of the Sydney guys are doing the same & have nothing but good things to say :)

Since Mitsubishi are annoying with their oil specification, I'm now running Mobil 1 in my EVO. Porsche recommend it & the EVO comes factory filled with it as well... Figured since Porsche use it, Nissan use it in the R35 GTR + Corvette & all high end GM's use it... Pretty sure I can't go wrong :D

Mobil 1 is a very good oil, it's just quite expensive and I wonder if a big factor is their marketing costs :)

But yes it is annoying when an oil meets the correct grade but not in the preferred base type or additives package. Australia seems to get a lot of dud oils which are a downgrade of the same ones marketed overseas (even of the same name).

So for a car with 110K kilometres, do you (Jim & Q) think that 5W30 or 0W30 (yes I know the 5W or 0W makes no difference once warm :P) would be fine?

Yeah that'll do the job; no need to go over the top you should give your extra money to charity :)

The most expensive oils like Motul 300V or any other ester based oil, is not only the best/overkill but also lasts the least amount of time, so it's less practical if you are using it for regular driving since you have to change it often.

5W-30 is readily available (I haven't seen 0W-30 on shelves anywhere), and is your best bet IMHO. If you find you are consuming oil then go up to a 5W-40. The oil that is thinner when cold is going to give you better protection at startup regardless of if the weather is cold or not. 15W-xx is a bit too thick for your engine in Melbourne.

5W-30 or 40 would be ideal. Out of curiosity how often do you change the oil?

I think the last time it was done was before Christmas.

Castrol Edge Sport is a good thing... TMR actually uses this in their race cars & after many meets (Which included Bathurst 12 Hour) the engine still doesn't need any rebuilding & looks as good as new.

So, oil change - should I use 5W30, or should I go 5W40 to be safe?
