Tyre Options

As any of you guys may be aware the 3.0rb Lib's run 215/45/R18 Potenza tyres....mine need to be replaced!
A trip down to the shop and ive been told that this tyre config gives me a rather limited tyre option is so far as brand etc....and that im looking at about $350 for each tyre to fit new potenza's back on.
The tyre guy said that if i raised the profile i would substantially increase my options and could get some good tyres for about the $200ish mark.

So 2 part question....other than having a bit more tyre visible over the wheel is there a negative / positive change in increasing the tyre profile.
and in the 215/45/R18 what are you guys running...how have you found them and would you put them back on when it comes time to change you tyres

yes its a very promising option. but once you factor in shipment, fitment and balance, your back up to bout the same..

what im looking for is some feedback on tyre options...do i go with something not as grippy and soft as the potenza's that will offer similar or equal on road quality but will last another 10,000km....im not tracking the car, so im looking for quality vs quantity vs longevity

plenty of guys get 50,000km+ out of the 050a's so don't worry about the other options out lasting them

That would be the guys that only do highway driving and then the 050's are a complete waste of money imo. The main positive if the 050 is the handling/grip. The downside of good handling/grip is the price and longevity which is expensive and short.

After 30000klms any tyre is getting past its best imo. There's only so much rubber can take captain

I'd suggest Falken FK452..slightly cheaper, almost the same grip and a fair bit cheaper (than the equivalent 050)

at approx $500 each the potena is a very expensive tyre...at the listed price of 275..plus shipment and fitment (bringing it to approx $310 p/tyre) the offer for the potenza's from the wheel center in syd offering the potenza's off factory upgraded 3.0rb's they become comparable to the falkins....
if i change profile to 225/40/18....i have so many more options..is there anywhere that does road tests for tyres? i know wheels do a tyre section once or so a year in their mag

Anyone who is getting 50000klms out of an 050 obviously does not go round corners at all fast so why waste the money on these tyres when something at half the cost is going to serve their purpose just as well? Yes these tyres may stop fractionally faster in an emergency situation or produce slightly more lateral G in a flailing steering action trying to avoid that rampant penguin that's just jumped out from behind the bus but unless you actually enjoy driving the car like it has been designed then I think they are a waste.

The guy who owned my car before me was about 59 years old, so my tyres have 55,000km on them (54,000 from previous owner) and they still held up pretty damn well considering...didn't they Jim

Holy crap your RE001 have 55KKms them? They must be cactus lol.
Conversely I just want mine to wear down so I can justify getting something else but even after today they are hardly scrubbed.

Mine is a GT.B so I'm running RE050A's. Figured I would post a counter argument to the RE050A bashing above.
