Radio Shack and Dick Smiths have a good range. Get a GME or Uniden about $80-$100 for a single handheld is decent.

Have a look at this topic: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=5744

I ended up buying the 2 Watt UH065SX from http://www.prestigecom.net.au but it looks like that model has been discontinued.
(You might be able to get it here: http://www.ryda.com.au/Uniden-UH065SX-U ... h065sx.htm )

The GME TX650 is only 1 Watt, but a really nice small and rugged design. You get a pair for $148.50.

Kieran,

I just bought a couple of handhelds from Dick Smith. Not great coverage or range if one gets lost. If your R32 mate is "legally inclined", you may also want to get some VOX headset/mics so your hands remain on the wheel at all times! :)

Kind Regards,

Mark.

Okay thanks Ric I will try and get the Uniden's from that website, sent them an email.

Uhhh hang on a second, that Uniden one is a single device?
I was planning on just buying this as a gift to my mate, not super keen on spending $180 on something for him out of the blue lol.
Might go with the twin pack you showed.

What would be the approximate range on the 1 Watt GME's? As long as it's a couple of km's or so I'm happy with that, it's basically just so we can talk while we are driving, as our cars are pretty evenly matched so I don't see either of us pulling away from one another, and if we do get lost we always have our phones :P

Interestingly it is not illegal to use a handheld UHF radio whilst driving! It's so that emergency services aren't breaking the law.

Kieran I have had a Uniden 1W handheld for a while and used it in many situations. In on highways or anywhere flat and open I can easily get about 1 to 1.5kms before it starts getting choppy. In twisty mountainous areas lucky to get 50m if there is no direct line of sight.

Hey Kieran,

Nice banner advertising the meet. Just inpsired me to plan one for 10.10.10. It also happens to be a Sunday. Maybe we can make this a country meet, say Bendigo or Ballarat and find some interesting ways to get there and back instead of the main highways. Might take this to a new thread. Next year will be interesting, 11.11.11 (A Saturday Armstice Day Cruise)?

Al,

All good to borrow the CB. 7am would not worry me either for a start. We would have to reconsider the meal planning, more like breakfast at Kinglake, then coffee at Healesville! :)

I have ordered my set of radios, so if my mate is unable to make it in his R32 if he is working, someone can borrow one.
However if you do borrow it you must refer to me only as Maverick, and I will call you Goose.
