Ultrex Grille fitment

Postby Jaz » Thu Mar 04, 2010 3:33 pm

Before I painted and fitted my grille I bought off the forum second hand, I did a a test fitment and found a few issues. Before I take it up with Ultrex I thought I'd gauge whether this is within their tolerances.

The grille in question is a fibreglass unit for labelled for 06+, and the car is an MY07GTB

Are the above gaps to be expected or do I have a problem? It was also pretty stiff to shut the bonnet too.

Umm, why did you buy a grill meant for the MY04-MY06 for your MY07? The grill size changed for the post facelifts. Or were you told it would fit your MY07 and was sent a MY04-MY06 grill? In any case you're going to get that gap so best to return it or exchange it for the post facelift models (keep in mind most of these Chinese made ones are meant for the US market so look for MY08+ USDM).

I was told it was a post facelift, and the previous owner didn't fit it to his 05 for that reason, he did a test fitment and decided he'd bought the wrong one, and that's why I bought it, thinking it was in fact for a rev D or MY07.

Are you saying it looks like it's for a rev A-C?

It looks a LOT like mine... and mine's an 04-06 model. Even the holes look undersized like mine was (until i opened em up). It wouldn't be an ULTREX o4-06 grill, as his has 4 pop clip holes, yours (and mine) only has 2

More likely than not. Even if it was made for the MY07+ Spec B and you had a MY07+ non-Spec B, it would still sit flush. Plus it was labeled MY06+ which is still A-C (at least in Australia and the USA).

Hey Buddy - it isn't supposed to look like that. Its supposed to look like this

http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj11 ... 010697.jpg

I dont know how this ones been treated so anything is possible but I think its just an install issue and easy fixed.

There is a trick to installing these grills to get them sitting correctly - otherwise they will sit up high like yours is. Bonnet wont shut

You need to hold the grill in front and push it in backwards ensuring the little lug (fibreglass hook) at the bottom clips in to position.....Judging by the pictures, you have lowered it in to position....meaning the little hook at the bottom (which you cannot see when your installing it) is sitting on top of the latch thats its supposed to clip in to.....so remove it - hold it in front of position it needs to be in and and push it in backwards ensuring the bottom lug/clip clips in to position (the bottom clip I am talking about is simply a fibreglass bump on the bottom of the grill. The the hook will be under the latch and not on top like yours...

That should solve the problem.... any dramas pm me.

cheers
Rob

Ahh, good catch Rob! I thought that trick was only for the MY04-MY06 models! Good luck Jaz! I'm sure it's just a simple little trick as Rob pointed out. :D

Hey mate,

Sorry your having troubles, this is exactly how it fitted on mine too (I have photos nearly exactly the same as yours). I thought it just ment 07+ didnt fit <07 3RB (like the rumours said it did), maybe it was the grill that was wrong, not the car. I also still have messages in my inbox from Ultrex confirming that i was infact buying a grill to fit a 07+. So im not too sure whats happened!?

Hey Woodduck - yours is the 2006 3R ?? So I think from your install that the 3R is a different grill - so from your feedback I advise it doesnt fit the 3R..But Jaz doesnt have a 3R.. its a gtb (isnt ist Jaz) so it should fit if installed properly....

My car is an MY07 GTB sedan.

Cheers for that, i'll have a closer look at how it clips in down thei bottom and go from there. I'm pretty confident that it's my technique as I'm not sure that the standard grille sat the way it was prior to removal.

So bottom first is the go?

So after sending further PMs to Ultrex I discovered I just needed to treat it a little differently to the standard grille. You do need to definitely hook the lower lip under the lip of the front bar and it will go on without too much difficulty. Once I went about it the right way it fitted quite well.

I did have to enlarge the holes slightly but once I went about it the right way it did go on and sit ok on my MY07. It isn't a factory item so I shouldn't have considered fitment to be like factory.

I lashed out and had it professionally painted in two pac so it was nice and hardy and (hopefully) stone chip resistant.

Came up ok.

My next question:

To badge or not to badge?
