"Big Brake Kits" - who's done what?

Postby Mo_GT » Thu Jan 21, 2010 11:31 pm

I've done a bit of reading here and on legacygt.com forums about BBKs and looks like either ap racing or brembos would be the best with wilwood being the easiest to fit.

I'm looking for a straightforward kit that comes with everything.

Now, what i'd like to know is who's got what? Any one with an AP Racing kit?

And where do you buy these (new) from locally?

Thanks.

Most people go for the Brembo option as it's the most readily available & one of the cheapest options (Looked into heaps before I went with the Brembos).

Comes down to how much you want to spend at the end of the day... But for 99% of people, the Brembos will do the trick :D

as will the standard calipers with good pads and discs. Bling factor suffers though

As long as the drive is not a MY07+ GTB with 10 spoke rims.
There is insufficient clearance to fit any larger caliper. "The Serge" has been down that road.

+1 Am really happy with even non-GT brakes now I have good pads and fluid installed. Also have a cusco master cylinder brace on its way; the place where I bought the pads through advised it will improve pedal feel more noticeably and reliably than even braided lines.

Here's a good article re rubber vs braided hoses, you can see the measured improvement with braided lines is tiny like maybe 1%:

I'd not call that a good article teK.

I just skimmed it (couldn't be bothered reading an Autospeed article), but that improvement appears massive. They state the OD increased by 2.4% in an old rubber hose, 1.7% in a brand spanking new one and "less than 1%" in a braided stainless one.

To me, that equates to the braided line exhibiting roughly half the increase in OD of a brand new rubber hose (and we all know how rubber deteriorates) and roughly a third of that of an old one!

Also remember that OD is a linear function, but the volume of fluid is a parabolic second degree polynomial.

So the difference is the square of at least double the change, times the length of tube. That's not tiny ... something a quick drive would have told them.

Yeah it's an interesting read Tony and one other factor that is mentioned to have not be taken into account is the fact that the brake fluid can be up to 300degC, so surely the rubber must soften up at that point. It doesn't mention if the pressurised solution they pump through it on the test rig is heated or not.

Typical Autospeed, not worth the paper it isn't written on.

Back on topic,

Mo, do a search for the Endless kit. Supposedly a straight bolt up and on paper, a serious bit of gear.

Yes , I believe that a Perth WRX forum member WRXRW has a endless setup on a 2006 Lib GT ???

Might be worth chasing up an opinion from him. Very knowledgeable bloke.

+1…... I saw a set of 6 pot mini Endless front calliper going for around $1800 on rex net…… I will try and find the link.

Btw make sure you get a well match pads and rotors…….. Even with Brembo's, I found the oem rotors and pads rubbish…… I have currently got some dixcel FS heat treated rotors and type m pads being fitted soon.

LOL... Ramon's brakes are Harrop's... and were purchased for his racecar WRX project (12yrs on the go so far!)

They are a sensational peice of equipment, but by no means cheap!

As has been mentioned, bang for buck, and availablity, there is no question that Brembo's are the best option!

There are a few other options that are close to the same price range (AP's/Prodrive etc) but you would be buying brand new almost definitely, and they generally dont have a matching rear caliper...

Another thing to consider, and another tick in the Brembo box, is the availability/cost of replacement pads/rotors... A number of the big name calipers are suprisingly hard to find pads/rotors to suit in AUS!

With a Brembo front and rear conversion, what parts are needed for a proper conversion?

Do brembo's off a GDB sti work?
