White Lights

Hey guys, My brother and I just did a quick job replacing the headlights and high beams in his Rover 75...
Was an absoloute b*tch to install, because there was no room for your hands and tools, but anyway...
We took advantage of the sales and bought the headlights, on the box it says... and I quote... "Superior White Light"
50% whiter then other bulbs, etc etc... "Gives your car a modern look with White headlights" After install we stood back and turned them on.. and they were just as Yellow, if not slightly more then the bulbs that were in there as stock. What the hell happened?
Have we bought the wrong bulbs? Cause they weren't exactly cheap, and were pretty displeased with the result.
Will they look white at night time?

Any light you can shed on this (pardon the pun... not even in the mood)

Is your brother's Rover headlights projector style? I find that any superwhite halogen's ability to produce any white become useless by projectors. Reflector style headlights fair better. However have a look at the bulb you bought. How blue is the glass? If it's not that blue, don't expect much white to come from it.

If you're after 'white' light, don't touch anything to do with halogen. Halogen light is yellow by nature, so any whitening comes from tinting the bulb glass blue. The more blue the glass, the whiter the light. Unfortunately this compromises safety because light output is seriously diminished.

You could get a HID conversion kit off eBay for under $150 nowadays, a great investment IMO. I'd skip all the so called 'white as HID' marketing hype and go straight to just getting HID.

+1 Agree with Jim. Once you go HID you won't go back...

Thanks for the reply's fellas, The bulbs we bought are blue - dark blue in color, which is one of the reasons we bought them...
But I'll let him know about the HID kits. Never know, might be just what he is after.

What about the wiring loom? I had a '93 Toyota several years ago and upgrading the wiring loom made a remarkable difference to the brightness of the 'standard' headlights, even before changing over to the 'white light' type bulbs.

like previously said. You can buy brighter halogens which are really only a bit brighter.
Or you can buy whiter/bluer halogens which actually look worse on the road. i have owned 4000k 5000k halogen's - phillips and other brands.

Halogen bulbs simply just don't do it and will not look like the honda/bmw HID's.
