There have been few drama's getting a clutch for this car but I think there is light at the end of the tunnel not just for me but others as well. The problem is that nobody makes a solid flywheel as a replacement for the dual mass one so we are stuck with buying a new Sachs flywheel (standard issue Subaru and costs a fortune) or attempting to grind your existing one. It is possible to get it ground but its a tricky job and whether or not it is successful is dependant on the skills of the operator of the lathe/grinder.

SO......Jim Berry (clutch guru in Brisbane) is considering making 5-10 solid flywheels to suit our cars to save going through the bullshit with this dual mass version. He has a new Sachs flywheel in his workshop now (it was for my car but thankfully I got mine ground so didn't need it :D ) so he has all the measurements he needs to start manufacture. Now its up to you what you choose to do but I'm sure a couple of calls to him enquiring about solid flywheels for a 2.0GT would hasten the process up considerably because all you guys with 100,000klms + on your drivetrains are going to need a clutch sooner rather than later

No. Exedy supply the standard sachs flywheel.

Any update on this Q? How much did it roughly cost you getting it replaced? PM me if you don't want to divulge the price on line ... just wondering how much roughly I'd be looking at (have the same model car as you).

Got the car back and all is good :)

Ended up costing $1500 which is considerably cheaper than Subaru. Pedal is lighter and it feels much better than the oem clutch. Done a few hard launches and its holding quite nicely :D Jim makes a good clutch.

Not a bad price Q - I was worried it would have been a lot closer to 2K than that considering the effort they had went through... Tempted - just have to convince myself if I really need to change the OEM one or not as yet!

I didn't have much of a choice in that, as soon as it came on boost it was slipping badly so I didn't want to chance having my wife and kids stranded on the side of the road.

Hey guys,

I will be needing to replace the clutch on my baby soon! so has anyone come up with any other information on what we have available to us?

I have been looking on Japanparts.com and have found that they supply a replacement option for the clutch and the flywheel on our cars:)

These parts seem to be cheaper then Subaru parts parts in Aus.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

http://www.japanparts.com/db/partslist.php?dealer=1&car=6&middle=1&small=4

Also does anyone Know if our cars clutch is a pull type or a push type? reason being is that Exedy have a list of different clutch's and a race flywheel!(solid not duel mass)

See the link.

http://www.exedy.com.au/SpecSheet.aspx?SpreadsheetRowId=64460

These are all push type setup and Subaru Melbourne ( Docklands) said that our cars are pull type when I gave them a call this morning.

I'm so confused! If our car is pull type then what car are all the parts for from Exedy in the link above???

I'm trying here guys!

any help, suggestions and feedback would be great!

Cheers,

Monty.

Thanks mate,

I had a look at my clutch last night, turns out it is a push type:D

Just about every other Subaru is a pull type, that's probably why I was given the wrong info from Subaru.

Going on this Exedy should have lots of options for MY05 drivers :D

I will pursue this further and let you all know what I come up with.

Cheers,

Monty.

Note that with the above JapanParts link, there is now a replacement JUN lightweight flywheel to replace the stock, heavy Sachs dual-mass flywheel. I have had this "confirmed" to fit the EJ20Y 5MT though do not know if anyone has fitted this yet to an Aus delivered Liberty.

The only disadvantage is that the dual-mass design is *supposed* to eliminate any unwanted engine vibration, but considering many 2.0L Subaru's running single piece flywheels, I hardly think this will be a problem.

I was looking at replacing my clutch (has 160,000kms under its belt) and swapping the flywheel for this cheaper, lighter job, but I've bought a house so this will have to wait (or hold up) another year or two.

Hi maj,

I hope your clutch holds up for you!

Thanks for the input, I think that if there is no solid flywheel option ( my preference ) then the JUN fly looks to be a much better and cheaper option then replacing the original with another from Subaru.

The latest I heard from Exedy is that they don't make anything other then a OEM replacement clutch with a Sachs fly for our cars, even though they have a whole bunch of stuff on their website under the listing for our cars :x

Anyway i'll put off replacing the clutch as long as possible in hope that some better options will come up while I can still drive my car.

Thanks again for any input guys,

Monty.

yes the Jun fly wheel is solid and will work fine

but they are made to order at this stage with about a 2 month wait after you place the order
