Thanks for your impressions Clarence. I don't think my Eclipse head unit's internal amps have enough driving current to get my Focal's working, but that said they are relatively efficient and had no issues being driven with my previous Kenwood head unit's internal amp. Might have to do up some dummy wiring just so I plumb in my spare Eclipse amp to see how it sounds.

G'Day Tangcla,

Cheers for the feedback, I think I'll take the several thousand $$$ and re-do my bedroom, sure there is a danger that if I put an xbox in there, I won't come out but eh, whatever...
Now that I'm in North America, I'm greatly concerned about raised pick-up trucks and owners of wedge shaped vehicles. Seriously, not only do you have to be concerned about one hitting you in an accident, they stand a good chance of driving over you at the same time!

You'll probably enjoy it more than spending it on car audio too :wink:

loweart wrote:Hey Clarence, I'm curous to know of your thoughts/impressions regarding the D Class multi channel Alpine amp you've used in your fitout ? As in what does sound like, is it musical etc ????

Thanks in advance,
Lok

I have a couple of years of experience with the PDX class D amps and I have no complaints. Traditionally I have used class AB amps, but less space for the install led me to the class D. I am so happy with them I would certainly use them again. My ears would say they are very musical! Class D is frequently misunderstood, probably because some of the early attempts weren't brilliant. These days Alpine (and Eclipse I think) use Bang and Olufsen's ICEPower class D system.

In the car environment, with all it's compromises, I think the class D amps are a logical choice.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts on the latest Class D amps in comparison to the traditional AB types. I agree with your opinion in regards to some of the "bad press" that came from the early models of Class D amps and realise that it's not the same these days.

Thanks for that Tony, muchly appreciated.

Cheers,

tangla what did you mean by
"Installation is easy if you are wiring in an aftermarket amp - you only need three wires from the factory loom (+12V constant, +12V accessory and illumination); ground it (and you may as well ground the handbrake lead ;)); microphone; GPS antenna; and the rest is to the amp - remote, RCAs x2/4/6 and that's everything you need."

if i was to remove the factory headunit and amp how would i wire up all the speakers to the new amp? i have a 4 channel amp to run the speakers and mono block to run subs and a clarion flip out dvd player with screen.

George: Fly me up and I'll do it for you for $650. I'm serious.
However though, highly recommend the Eclipse AVN726EA, a decent unit and you don't need the additional Bluetooth, GPS modules as it's all built in.

My parts cost the following:
* Eclipse AVN726EA $1250
* Alpine PDX-5 $650
* All Stinger wiring (easiest stuff to use, ever), RCAs and terminal <$200

edit: Price for the AVN726EA is no longer available :(

I am not missing the cubby idea too much. Got used to it already. :P
it is actually quite hard and tiring to use up so high.

The Subaru Dealership in Parramatta are selling the new Pioneer Integrated Unit (Model No: AVIC-F900BT) for all up with a reversing camera, into the existing location with steering wheel control (mine is an MY05 pre-facelift 3.0RB) for...

...wait for it...

...drum roll...

$4950 inc. GST

JB Hifi have them on special for $1732...personally, if I was spending that much it would be at a store for in the eventuality that something goes wrong. You might get your warranty void from Pioneer if it say the deck was imported from overseas. That sort of thing happens a lot with Home Theatre gear and almost every time the local importer won't warrant the goods.

Also worth bearing in mind, Tangcla is right when he says the Eclipse deck is better and for the price he can get it at, I'd go down that path. I convinced my boss to install one in his new Forester after I did some research into features and the like. His nephew works for Tynan and a lot of the guys at that dealership also recommend that unit if you are going for an aftermarket system.

My Mac for some reason intermittenly drops volume to 50% of what I had it at when playing CDs so it's days may be numbered, so I just might go down the Eclipse path myself (resisting all puns about the path being dark because of the eclipse and all)

Still thinking which way to go as I do have a AV panel set already, plus a second cubby hole to modify.I like to take my time on this mod as the Mac
still runs fine.
