Tap Turn Module

Tap Turn Module

Postby tony_m » Fri Aug 09, 2013 7:04 pm

Found this on legacygt.com... Very interested!

It's on the Mrs' Cruze from factory, also most newer Euro cars. When I first drove her car I was pretty keen on the idea. Tap the indicator stalk (up or down) without clicking it on and it signals 3 times and then auto shuts off. Perfect for lane changes on the highway, within reason, and around the suburbs with minimal traffic, etc.

This guy sells a replacement module which goes where the original Denso indicator/hazard module was from factory. Retains all normal operations just adding the touch-on function. Also does a "wig wag" or something, looks like an emergency car's lights when sirens are on. Useless but another feature anyway.

Also you can change how many times the indicator flashes, 3, 4, 5, etc..

They are going for about $79 USD but he's given out all instructions to make them from a couple of dollars worth of parts. Unfortunately electronics, soldering, and his schematics are all beyond my ability, however I'd happily give it a shot!

Thought some of you guys might be interested.

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/tap-turn-signals-31995.html Schematics and instructions are on page 2.

His site http://www.autowindow.com/orderTAP.html

If anyone wants to clarify (dumb-down!) the instructions for me I'd be stoked! Also no idea where to get the parts... Perhaps Jaycar? The heart of this mod is a chip which by way of a Google, looks like Jaycar stocked years ago, but not any more.

Let me know what you think. I'm aware of a select few who flame the idea over on legacygt.com. But each to their own. I love it haha.

Very handy. Mk5 VW Golfs and later have it IIRC (that's the community I came here from, though I had a Mk4-based vehicle).

Plug 'n' Play is always nice...

Yes, Jaycar or Altronics would have all the components on the schematic.

The heart of this mod is a chip which by way of a Google, looks like Jaycar stocked years ago, but not any more.

Logic chips are often known by many various, similar names.
Jaycar do still stock an equivalent, as do Altronics.

Tap Turn Module

Postby tony_m » Sat Aug 10, 2013 5:02 pm

Cheers Ric. Thus proving my lack of knowledge!

Keen to see if anyone makes this unit. Perhaps a walkthrough to match!

I'm sure you can get blank circuit boards and solder on the components. Still, I have no idea what the diagrams mean. Haha. How guys think of a solution or modification and make it from electronics amazes me!

Intro (self): Hi, I'm Scott McPhee, the guy who makes this Tap Turn thing.

Just want to clarify a couple things, the schematic posted on that forum is for an early generation version that just does 3-blink extensions for a tap. It's old, and has been replaced by a new microprocessor based version that has 3,4,5,6 blink programmability or OFF (using signal stalk only), cancel feature that can stop a series of blinks, extra hazard modes: wig-wag, slow motion, and slow wig-wag (undocumented, ask me how). The new version is the drop-in replacement for your Denso flasher that you swap out (plug an play). The old version is a 4-wire tap-on thing you attach to your existing flasher with wiretaps.

You can still make the old version according to the schematics on legacygt forum, if that's all you want to add to your car. I don't make that one anymore and two words of caution: you should know what you're doing with the electronics if you go that route, and I don't maintain that schematic anymore - the last version posted the is not the most up to date thing - I had made some changes since to patch a problem, and this is not reflected in the circuit diagrams. Like I say, I've moved on.

You can get the new one ordered from the website using the world airmail shipping choice. Yes, many have shipped to Australia this way!

By the way, what's the most common name given to the "turn and hazard signal relay" in this land:
- blinker
- flasher
- signal relay
- ?? something else ??

And when the hazard switch is pressed, what is the most common name of the resulting 4-way flashing:
- hazards
- emergencies
- 4-way flashers
- flashers
- ?? something else ??

I want to make sure I'm thinking and speaking the same thing when words come up on this forum that are related to Tap Turn.

Cheers!
Scott

Welcome!

Usually here we say blinker and hazards.

One more...

And when you use the remote to lock or unlock the car, what's the most common name for the resulting flashes:
- arming flash
- alarm flash
- confirmation flashes
- remote flash
- ?? something else ??

That one I don't really hear people say but I would say arming flash. Alarm flash would also make sense here I think.

Others may feel free to correct me (not that you need permission).

Thanks for clarifying those points Scott. The DIY would be a fun project, but nothing beats the simplicity of a total plug and play replacement!

Read about the evolution of this mod - Congrat's on a job well done!

I have just made Scott a "vendor" on this board, and created a new sub-forum for him.
This will give him somewhere to make some special offers to Australian members :)

Welcome Scott!
I've been lusting over your Tap Turn module since I bought the Lib ;)

In the longer term I'm planning a "full monty" Auto Window install with Rain Sense, auto mirrors, the works.

The products are really well though out and great value for money IMHO.
