Greetings my names Mani and I drive a USDM 02 WRX and a 05 WRX. I came across this forum group from a nice guy I met on a FB group. I don't own a Liberty nor I am Aussie, but I sure enjoy this Liberty forum board. Im looking forward to learning more about Liberty/Legacys from you guys. So far I've seen a few peoples builds here and I think they are beautiful. Keep it up!!

Hi Mani.. Mate I am loving the look of you sti.. We have a collection of WRXs but they are all the early models that you guys never got.. My Liberty is the closest in appearance to your sti from the front, and that is one of the reasons I chose this model. Have you done any performance mods to your car? We have 2.5lt engines in our early models and lots of goodies. I just spent thousands getting my Liberty up to the same power levels as our others but the Libertys a heavier car and although it handles just as well it is not so nimble because of it's weight. I think it is quick now but then I get in one of the others and straight away they put a bigger smile on my face.. These are the GC8s both with 2.5 ltr engines. My wife also has a Silver Bugeye WRX (2001). I think the Bugeyes were the first models you got in the states.. Bummer.. You missed out on the best models ..

Those GCs look so beautiful!!

I actually have a WRX its not a STi, I am try to get there though

This car had a quite alot done to it when I bought it. I've had alot of components fail me through this first year of owning, it not to let alone its my first car.

The car has
K&N Typhoon Short Ram Intake
STi Intercooler
IHI VF48 Turbo
Tial 38mm External Wastegate with a screamer pipe
Invidia catless downpipe
Grimmspeed up pipe
HKS Exhaust
HKS SSQV BOV
COBB 1050X Injectors
Wallbro 255 fuel pump
Tuned on e85 (no flex fuel) MAF based tune
Grimmspeed 3 port ebcs
Unbranded AOS
Unbranded Aluminum Radiator
Tein Coilovers
SPC adjustable rear links
STi full interior
JDM STi Headlights

327HP/322TQ

I want to build it differently, after getting with bigBADbenny and talking more about issues with my build I want to take it another direction

I want to build it conservatively and not overkill the car with power and build it wit the intentions of it being a car to drive mountain roads. So far I am making a step to go back to stock and go back to the stock BPV. I just found out there a BPV called the 'E" because its stamped on the bpv, but this one caters to my boost. The E bpv holds around 24psi which is perfect as my car is pushing 22psi. I want to also redo the whole fuel system with AN PFFE lines along with a new FPR and rails. I will also go with TGV deletes as well. Im not sure if my Short Ram intake would be better than a cold air intake up on mountains I need help deciding on that. I will also look into adding more suspension components to improve handling. My biggest dream is to throw on a STI speed for its shorter gear ratios, this one will be hard. I will approach the build with the initial things that don't require tuning first, then Ill slap all tuning components all at once and have it tuned.

Welcome!

I'm not sure if my Short Ram intake would be better than a cold air intake up on mountains I need help deciding on that

As a rule, ingesting cold air will give much greater benefits* than ingesting hot air regardless of the "low restriction" claims on the box for the engine bay pod filter.

Use a critical eye when reviewing so-called "cold-air intake" kits - some seem to be an engine bay pod filter with an ineffective shield on one side - as if air can't get around things.

A genuine cold-air intake will draw air from somewhere outside the engine bay (eg the front bumper or a front guard). I made my own secondary cold-air feed to the factory air box with lengths & bends of aluminium ("aluminum" to you Yanks :P ) and silicone pipe.

[*(1) greater air density meeting the turbine compressor wheel means greater density of boosted air = more power, (2) less knock, more timing = more power]

I agree with Yowie, a little long pipe so the CAI is in the front guard is a LOT better than anything in the engine bay trying to find cool air, and , as like Yowie has said, making a vent to feed even more cold air into the front guard is good. The front of my Blue rex there is a vent that feeds cool air to the brakes, I cut a flap inside that vent at the front of the car so part of that cool air is forced into the guard. This is my wife's Bug.. She loves it. It is the loudest of all out cars and I can hear her coming from 2-3 minutes away. She recons the noise scares the wild life away from the road but I think she just likes the noise. We live in a rural area with lots of wallabies (small kangaroos) etc , that's why all our cars have additional lights.

What do you think of the TEIN suspension.. I have it on my Liberty GT and find the ride quality and handling very good even when compared with our others that have Whiteline sways, links, bushes, anti lift kit, King lows (blue one) and strut tower bracing.

Stifull, you forgot to mention to our American friend that you always need to keep the sunroof closed on account of the dropbears.

Stiifull, I'd definitely like to put it in the front fender cover soon when i'm ready for a retune . So far Im digging my Teins. I have the Tein Flex Zs to be exact and there is definitely a good range of adjustability in the terms of how soft or how hard the ride quality feels. I haven't really spent so much time adjusting it as I feel lazy to keep popping my seats off, but I definitely recommend as I've had no issues so far :rotfl:

I think there is more than enough scary, deadly, things in Australia already without freaking people out even more, besides most of our roads are wide enough to not be driving under overhanging branches. I keep my sunroof closed all the time anyway to keep out the spiders, snakes, scorpions, blood sucking leeches and ticks etc that get in the car and attack you when you least expect it or latch onto you without you even knowing and days later make you wish you had been taken by a shark or a croc instead.

.. Firstly I am not a suspension specialist but I think I understand the difference in ride and stability that sway bars and coilovers have. Sway bars (anti roll bars) , as I understand them, work by transferring weight from one side of the car to the other.. As one side is lifted up by a car taking a corner fast, the sway bar has two opposing forces working on it. While the inside wheel is trying to lift off the ground while the other outside wheel is being forced downwards by the weight being transferred due to the effect of the car turning. The sway bar takes the upward movement from the inside wheel and forces the outside wheel to not go down as far, while the downward movement of the outside wheel is forcing the inside wheel to come down, so the sway bar is keeping the car flatter on the ground so the tyres have a better grip with the weight difference on either side being reduced. A thicker sway bar makes this weight distribution even more constant but, also makes the car more rigid and less comfortable for the passengers. Replacing the 2 inner sway bar mounts on the body and the 2 outer end links that connect the sway bar to the axle or differential from rubber bushes to polyurethane also helps to make this firmer and more rigid as well. So regardless of what springs and dampeners (shocks) you have, the sway bars will keep the car planted better as well as keeping all 4 tyres having more contact with the road. You only have to look at the guys who take the sway bars off their 4wds so the suspension can travel further to keep all 4 wheels in contact with the surface of rough terrain (good idea) but watch them go around a corner fast on a nice road and you can easily see why sway bars are also known as anti roll bars because the body of the car will be leaning/rolling a lot more than with the sway bars fitted. Start to loose it and turning it back the other way without sway bars and it will easily get out of control because the tyres are swapping weight around so much that they stop responding to the steering and well you know where that leads. Weight distribution on tyres is critical when breaking and cornering hard. For this reason you will see race cars breaking hard before a corner but releasing the brake soon enough before they enter the corner to allow the cars weight to settle evenly on the road. They rarely break during cornering, in fact they will often accelerate through the corner once the car has settled.

Coilovers, well they are just an improvement to normal springs and dampers that can raise a car or lower a car by a simple adjustment, make the ride softer or harder by adjusting the dampening effect as well as giving the ability to increase camber (leaning of the wheels out at the bottom to increase tyre footprint when cornering) for track days or not leaning so much for normal driving so you don't wear your tyres out to quickly. Too much camber for normal driving will prematurely wear out the inside edge of your tyres. Coil overs also normally have a smaller diameter spring so they enable cars to have wider than normal tyres fitted without hitting the existing springs, being able to adjust for greater camber also means you can wind in the top of the tyres to stop them scrubbing on the guards. I built my blue wrx many years ago using normal but new wrx dampers with King Low springs. The springs are firmer and also lowered the car 30mm at the rear and 45mm at the front so it has a better stance, however because they are still a large spring they don't allow me to go any wider than a 215/45/17 tyre on a 17x7" rim. I also replaced both 19mm sway bars with 24mm front and 22mm rear as well as all whiteline bushes, links etc as well as an anti lift kit to stop the cars nose from going up every time a higher gear is engaged at high revs. My liberty GT has coilovers which allows me to have 235/40/18 tyres on 18x9.5" rims which not only give greater tyre footprint but also the GT has a wider track which also aids in stability. With the coil overs being soo adjustable you can just leave the stock sway bars, mounts and end links all standard and still achieve the desired results because the adjustability and design of coilovers can make up the difference.
Just a note. On my 4wd I bought some adjustable, greasable and most importantly detachable rear sway bar end links so when driving off road I simply pull out the "R" clip and locking pin and the sway bar simply lays on top of the swing arms so the car has much more reach/compression on the rear axle.. They were designed for a much bigger 4wd so I shortened them and increased the thread so they fitted my car perfectly. However I never actually bothered fitting them as I have gotten a little too old and lazy to take my beautiful 4wd camper out into the muddy powerline tracks etc and then having to spend the next 4 days cleaning the engine bay etc.
