1992 Subaru Liberty GX Celebration Sedan 2.2L AWD

Hi Guys,

This is my first post!!

My name is Kam, im from West Sydney, mid 20's married with one kid. I've always had a Toyota (corolla, camry, avalon). I decided to get a 2nd car so my wife can drive the Camry. I cam across a 1992 Subaru Liberty GX Celebration Sedan 2.2L AWD that a work colleague wanted to sell.

Its done 160k kms, full leather interior, full electrical windows(all 4) which i think is standard. It says that it is a limited edition on the dash and says that it is number 009. How many of these were made and are they worth anything? Other then abit of cosmetic damage on the exterior the car is very clean, no rips in the leather or interior.

I feel like i've purchased my first car, given that i've always had no more than 2yr old vehicles. I wanted to do abit of mods to it, but i'm not the best with cars. If it is a limited edition i know sometimes mods can decrease the value?

Would anybody have any suggestion as to what i could do to it? make it look and sound nice :P and were in Sydney i can get parts for it.

welcome aboard mate,
seems like it was a limited run that was specced up with better interior.
In celebration of what, who knows?

I don;t see it being a collectors item, it's only a Gen1 GX Liberty after-all.

As for mods, about all you can do is make them corner and stop better with brake and suspension upgrades.
you're not going to get much more punch out of the old EJ22 Auto, and spending money on "performance" will not give you bang for your buck

A simple cat-back exhaust (<2") can help give a little note from the boxer and may help with economy a little.
but lighter wheels, better shocks and springs, swaybars and better brakes will let you get through corners faster and safer and just give it a more sporty feel

Welcome Kam! Can't comment on the model or it's potential collectivity, but if you wish to do mods or add stuff to it, I'm sure you can find stuff in Sydney.
Try Garage 88 as a vendor, Import Monster and obviously E bay and Gum Tree for parts. Good luck!

Its a limited edition and why its called a "celebration" is that it is celebrating 20,000 Subi's made prior to its release. The amount of extra's on the interior are unbeleivale, its well beyond its age.

I don't plan on spending too much on it especially since for what i paid for it, it was basically a steal. I just want to make it look and sound abit nicer. I would probably look at some rims, sound system, exhaust (anybody have any suggestions?)

Hey mate.

Congrats on the purchase. I love Gen 1 liberty's! Throw up some photos of the beast!

Yeah performance wise, been a non turbo. No real point in spending money on that department. But, they can be made to handle very well and i believe share the same suspension components as the first Gen WRX (GC8)? So finding upgrades should be super simple.

If you don't want to spend a whole heap of money right now. I highly suggest getting onto the Whiteline site http://www.whiteline.com.au/index1.php and find out out what part numbers suit your car regarding bushes. Then jump on eBay and copy/ paste the part number in for some cheap upgrades. As bushes are made from rubber, they degrade over time and usually are responsible for making older cars feel loose and rolly. Sway bar bushes, sway bar links and an Anti Lift Kit make a huge improvement over stock/ worn bushes. A set of sway bar bushes might set you back $20-$30! So they are really cheap upgrades with minimal mechanical knowledge for installing.

Gen 1 Liberties are also blessed with Unequal Length Exhaust Manifolds. Which are what give Subaru engines that common 'Subaru sound' that you no doubt have heard. So for you, all you need to really do is an upgraded rear muffler. Don't be fooled by cheap 'Cannon mufflers' as they usually are to loud, give a worst sound and less flow than a well known exhaust brand l
