New Owner needing help

Hey Forum,

Ok so I lied, I'm not a new owner just yet, but I have every intention of being an owner and a part of this community.

To start all I've ever known so far is Toyotas and I'm wanting to purchase my first Liberty wagon to use as a daily and take to the snow when the season comes so I can leave my petrol guzzling Supra at home during the week.
So I'm a bit of a noob with model numbers and what to search for, also from what google tells me I get the feeling model numbers vary despite being the same vehicle if it came from another region. Also would like to know which parts are interchangeable with the liberties themselves and other models.

I'm after a turbocharged wagon, and have been looking at around 2004-2007 models and was hoping to find out which one (including ones outside my scope) would be easier with parts, new, second hand, genuine or aftermarket parts.

I only plan on doing some mild bpu mods, fmic, 3" dump pipe, boost controller maybe piggy back ecu nothing big as it will still be my daily.
anything I should add to that list for preventative measures?

Any help would be appreciated

Hey mate welcome,

The mistake I did was not looking this up also. The 04-06 have a unique engine setup and most engine parts aren't interchangeable with other Subarus although the 2L is a very strong engine (ej20y - closed deck with strong internals) with twin scroll turbo and it won't sound like any other subaru. Also the turbo varies between manual and auto due to power restrictions on the auto box. Manual has a td04hla with stock power at 190kw. Aftermarket power bits aren't cheap because pretty much Aus and Japan got the 2.0T. Where as the 2.5T went to America in 05 and the car was face lifted in 07 with the 2.5T and different body/interior parts.

Having said all that I'm very happy I got my 05 gt wagon they are unique, quick and easily tuned

Thanks for the reply. That shatters my world a little bit.
I was under the impression with so many around aftermarket bolt ons would be relatively cheap and easily available.

What if I were to look at older models?
If the change with the US and AUS and JPY was around 05 im assuming models before then would have more parts cheaper and readily available?

And preferably a piggy back I could just plug in and didn't have to wire up myself.

No need, the stock ECU is fully tuneable. Fuel, timing the DBW throttle system, all the cam timing etc... no crappy Toyota inaccesbility!

Anyone know of any reputable tuners in Melbourne? Assuming the need for specialty software

Wealth of info on here. The MY04-06 are "prefacelift". The MY07-08 are post facelift (or facelift if you're a stickler for the English grammerz)

There are a few threads on here detailing the difference so hopefully this can point you in the right direction.

In terms of US liberties / legacies - they only ever received the 2.5 turbo GT. Both pre and post facelift that it. So aftermarket "bolt ons" for the ej20y 2.0 turbo aren't interchangeable.

However, parts are very readily available from the right people such as Garage88(commercial vendor on here and a great resource for this forum).

Also just to point out ej20y is not closed deck

Infact it's not even semi closed (ej255/257 2.5 and ej207 2.0 are semi closed)

They're a complete open block like the ej205

Hw common is the tuning software?

You can download software like ROMRaider (open source and free) and use your laptop via a Tactrix cable to have a peek and tweak at your ECU's ROM or monitor the engine in general yourself, but a professional tuner will be the best way to go if you want to make any changes.

Did not know it was an open deck. How much boost do people usually run (or what power goals) before feeling the need to close the black and rebuild?
My plan was to see what kind of boost increase I'd get from bigger dumps and most likely upping the boost to 12psi with a controller if it didn't get there itself

Dont need a controller. Boost targets are ecu tunable. You will get alot more than 12 psi without opening the engine.

Stock boost is 12psi or higher in most cases

Few EJ20y's running 20psi without , just not on the crappy stock turbo

wow... so it sounds like all I need to do is go get an exhaust and an intercooler and that's basically it lolz

stock ecu can be tuned, I'm assuming it already has an electronic boost controller which is also controlled by the ecu

I should have bought a liberty a long long time ago

Also, you don't need a FMIC if you are not looking for more than say 250kw@tw. Get an aftermarket TMIC, much easier to fit and no RWC hassles.
