Haha. Okay. Well, I've been blessed with the opportunity to have owned both the BL5 chasis (Type A - C) and the BL9 chasis (Type D). Albeit it's the auto tranny for both (yes yes, I know. I'm not a true sports car driver if it's not manual).
But I found the 2.0 GT had an aggressive turbo rush, which made driving a real pleasure. I just need to step on the pedal half way down when the turbo would attack the RPM's and I would feel that 'kick in the back' turbo feeling.
And after reading about how smooth and linear the 2.5 GT engine is, I figured the STi would be a more aggressive version of that. Now mind you this opinion is only based on my previous experience with the Liberty and the fact that I have an automatic, but the 2.5 GT was still too smooth! Gone was the kick in the back turbo rush. It's more of a gentle nudge.
Now I know what they mean by linear power. I'll admit the response and turbo lag is less than the 2.0 GT, but even when I stomp on the pedal all the way down, it would quickly (but less aggressively) propel me forward. Plus it would rev all the way up to redline, where there was less power to be found and it should have shifted to the next gear already.
And for the longest time I couldn't explain it to people until I read about the review of the new Impreza WRX in Wheels magazine. The new 2.5 turbo engine in the WRX has the pretty much the same characteristics as the STi with peak power coming in at 2800 RPM. But the writer describe the feeling as being the same as a V6.
Then I thought, "Wow, that's pretty much on the money." IMHO, the 2.5 engine is a turbo 4 that thinks it's a V6. Smooth and linear delivery. Makes me wonder why that's the reason Japan decided to stick with the 2.0 engine for the JDM version, whereas the rest of the world got the 2.5 litre to meet environmental requirements.
Anyway, I'm sure other STi owners would disagree, especially ones with a manual. I just found the new engine to be too grown up (which is what Subaru is aiming for with their change in company direction) and lost its aggressive spirit.
I'm hoping an ECU upgrade at MRT will restore what I once found so great about the 2.0 GT.
