4GEN Liberty/Legacy - RAM INTAKE SYSTEM

Postby Tradewind » Sun May 19, 2013 6:03 pm

After a weekend on testing new CAI setup in conjunction with XRT I pose the following options - tick the item you would like if you were choosing CAI

I decided on a poll to see what the H6 community might be interested in before I get too busy. THIS IS FOR NON SUPERCHARGED H6 powered CARS globally - so there is no confusion - yes for the factory standard Subaru engine

I have only 2 goals with the 3rd option - MORE POWER and the MOST refined H6 intake SOUND on the planet. Perfect driveability etc

Consider that the 3 option + Raptor headers + tune (either XRT or KiDO or your own choice) can show a significant power gain over stock. Yes that much is possible, definitely 20+Kw in total. These are very revy engines so we give it the 100% chance to unleash the potential of this excellent engine. By adding the tuned CAI to my Liberty it went from 149 kw to 158 kw (wheel) yesterday during testing. I have to set it up for cooler intake air and we expect 10kw+ gains consistently.

Both options 2 and 3 are dead easy to fit.

OPTION 3: Requires A TUNE, you cannot drive 1 meter without it. If you have already been tuned by KiDo (within 12months) then possibly this costs you no more, with XRT you need to enquire if any extra tune cost

Poll runs for 45 days - If option three is the most popular then we go ahead - if not then Raptor may not make a NA CAI at all - as I said, I look to bring power gains

The attached chart is a clue to what we are seeing from the unfinished prototype - no tuning apart from a MAF rescale. With additional tuning the power may increase even further - dont know that answer yet

This is the same development path we went with the headers - same testing - with XRT assisting on data analysis

I should add the following

WARNING - I have no idea if this new performance gain is achievable with factory exhaust manifolds - my personal thought is that the answer would be NO.

I am testing with 98 octane fuel, Raptor headers with stock exhaust system and cats. Tune is a normal NA tune rescaled 20% for the new intake pipe

Re: Time frame

I actually have to figure out how we are going to produce it, the shape of the intake is critical to performance and its extremely difficult to mass produce, this is why I am checking to see the interest levels before I put serious hrs into working out the method of manufacture

I would like to have it up and going by end of August if possible

Today I have left the intake with someone who has the capacity to reproduce it

I will collect it again and in the next 5 or so days make a video of the sounds through the rev range. Up to 5000rpm, you cant tell its not 100% stock, above that the H6 gods begin their chorus - nothing like you can imagine

I'd bite the bullet and say yes to option 3...

But, I am already in the planning stages for doing a turbo build at the end of the year

If one is staying NA, then there really is only one option! The power with the sound of the Porsche, gotta be a winner imo.

Why does option 3 require an immediate retune?

The distance across the intake tube at the MAF is increased by 20% (or 56% increase in area). Without retune car is so lean and detonates at the slightest touch of the throttle - even in first gear.

You simply drop in a reflash with MAF rescaled and you are driving to perfection in a moment.

This is an extremely serious NA upgrade, to gain around 10Kw from this piece alone is really going somewhere in the NA world. The pull is not unlike a supercharger in that the motor never seems to be running slowly out of puff as you near 7000rpm, it simply keeps up the pull all the way - seat of pants feels exactly like the dyno is showing - on and on and on with increasing power

Tim, just looking at the initial graphs more closely, bottom end power and torque is quite a bit down from the stock intake - do you have to sacrifice low end to make more top end with these types of intake?

H6 as you know is a flat torque engine as it is; ideally power/torque figures from 2000rpm up would be the same as stock but with a nice gain north of 6000rpm until redline.
