Nov 2011 visit

Postby MH3.0R » Mon Sep 05, 2011 10:46 pm

Hi Taswegians,

I'll be coming down to your beautiful state for a visit in mid Nov, bringing the 3.0R for a bit of a drive. Intend to do a lap of the apple isle. If anyone is up for a meet, show n shine, cruise, then just respond within this thread. At this stage, planning to arrive on the ferry, Sat 12 Nov, then cruising around your state, not available on the Sat 19 Nov and back on the ferry evening of Mon 21 Nov.

Hope to get a chance to meet up with you guys. For 3.0R owners, plenty of mods to discuss!

Kind Regards,

Mark.

Yes, planning to be in Hobart on Monday or Tuesday but pretty flexible at this point.

Any good accommodation suggestions?

Depends on your budget.

If your after somewhere really nice, check out the Henry Jones Art Hotel

Or if your like me and just need a clean room and a bed cant go past the Macquarie motor inn, central and under $100 a night generally.

Im going to be pretty free whenever around that time cause uni will be done. But def keen to have a look at your beast. :)

I will post up the routes I will be taking in the next couple of weeks. Have not booked any hotels as I figure it should not be too busy at that time of year. Probably doing an anticlockwise lap, starting at Devonport, down to Strahan, then across to Southport, then Hobart, then via Port Arthur to Swansea, then up to St Helen's and will go around the top to Bridport, Scottsdale and Launceston. After that lap, should be about time to catch the ferry home! Ferry is booked, accommodation will be whatever I get on the day!

this is via Hobart anyway
it is helicopter only from Strahan to Southport. take the time (extra 40 minutes from southport) to go down to Cockle Creek, it's as far south as you can drive in this country. Top camping spot, but just a nice piece of the world..you'll travel through state forest (eucalypt/ gum) that is logged and replanted.
but it's gravel for the last 20km.

what sort of budget are you looking at per night for accomodation?

Rob,

Thanks for the tip on Cockle Creek. I don't mind a bit of gravel and the scenery sounds worthwhile.

No budget set for accommodation but I am not going to be in any one spot longer than overnight, so I expect consider B&B style mostly.

Just an update. Still planning to arrive on Sat 12 Nov and route is same as mentioned and accommodation as I find it. Tentative overnight points are:
Sat, 12 Nov, Strahan.
Sun, 13 Nov, Southport.
Mon, 14 Nov, Hobart.
Tue, 15 Nov, Port Arthur,
Wed, 16 Nov, Swansea,
Thu, 17 Nov, St Helens,
Fri, 18 Nov Scottsdale,
Sat, 19 Nov, Scottsdale,
Sun, 20 Nov, Launceston
Mon, 21 Nov, Burnie, then Devonport by 5pm for an overnight ferry.
Don't hold me to this, as I can change my mind when the scenery gets hold of me!
Happy to meet up anywhere as long as you provide a Google Maps reference.

Kind Regards,

Mark.

Great drive today from Devonport to Tewkesbury (brother has a property there) with fantastic views from a hill at the back of his property with 270 degree views. Then the drive down to Zeehan, Strahan and Queenstown was just spectacular with nice twisties sections frequently. Did a recce of the climb out of Queenstown to Iron Blow and the road is the equivalent of any piece of tarmac in the world in my opinion. Big call, but I was impressed. Spectacular views combined with nice twisty tarmac. Looking forward to it again in the morning.

Mark whats the word on the 5-0 down there? People always say the police presence is basically nill on all the twisty parts around Tassie. Did you see any around?
My mate is always telling me about his motorbike cruises he goes on and how they never see a single cop, and everyone pulls over to the side to allow cruisers to overtake. Sounds like a dream down there, but how much of it is true? :o

Not one spotted today, and yes, two car pulled over after I came up on them from behind, but I did not tail gate nor do anything aggressive. It was just a delightful experience the 1st time it happened, but after the 2nd time, I am in love with this place!!! Well, let see how that plays out over the next week, if it remains consistent or was I just lucky.
