2004 Outback H6 3.0R Premium

Postby Zig_Zac » Thu Jan 15, 2015 8:45 am

Hi guys,

I'm relatively new here, come from a B4, which is still for sale. Lol!

Anyway, I picked up the Outback, in white, really low kms, and good price, so I couldn't refuse.

It is as stock as a rock, and I'm looking to make it a little better.

Got a tune from XRT over the xmas break, so it is driving better, more punchy, which is nice.

Now I'm looking at some handling because it ain't no B4, riding high and flying around corners with much roll.

Wondering, firstly, if I should go Liberty GT wagon springs and shocks, or should I go whiteline front and rear swaybars, first.

I will more more to the car eventually, but for now, what should I start with to give me a some better handling on the road and around corners?

Thanks
Zig_Zac

I have the adjustable Whiteline swaybars front and rear and they make a huge difference to the handling, I have them on the softer setting to keep it as comfortable as possible, I'm happy with it as is but at least with the adjustable bars you have the option to firm it up a bit if you want to. My eldest son has the Whiteline sways front and rear also but his stock struts and springs were pretty sad so he opted to replace them with Liberty suspension :) Have a read through this post -

Thanks for that mate. I read through that thread before and it was quite informative.

I'm looking to get those Lib GT shocks and springs if possible, and I heard a rear sway bar was enough, but why not go all out if it gives better handling. Lol!

Thanks again. I would definitely like better handling because right now I'm hearing the tyres screaming when I make quick turns :(

Definitely recommend front and rear sway bars. They make a huge difference. The offer is there if you want to drive mine to see how much of a difference it makes.

If your tyres are screaming around corners, have you checked your pressures and the age/condition of your tyres?

Thanks mate. Where in Sydney are you by the way?

I haven't checked the pressure, but tyres are under a year old, done maybe 7,000km, but will check the pressure on it for sure. What should it be by the way, in an empty outback on 17s.

I still loved by B4 though. Haha!

Near Parramatta, can head out your way no problems with enough notice.

tyre pressures are subjective. I run high 30s and adjust depending on my driving I'm doing.

Thanks for the offer mate. I guess I could take a drive out there one evening to come check out your ride, if you are cool with it and have the time.

Keep telling told I should lower it on Billies and make it more lib wagon, which I don't mind either.

I think I have 36psi in the tyres now, but I'll check them out this evening and see how I go.

99% of the time I'm just doing city driving. Only once I drove the outback around a paddock where my sisters have horses for fun. Car got dirty, I wasn't such a fan. Lol!

Ha yeah man, way too much power. Lol! Car takes off like nothing else. Would kill my B4 in a straight line, but it is the sharp turns where the wagon doesn't do well.

Yup, T/C is on 8)

Love your work mate. Raptor headers are next thing on the list for the engine :)

I mean has the TC pulled the car back into line yet when tyres are squealing?

Few XVs I have been doing in NASIOC I have lowered TC's influence is all ;)

Ahhhh, haha, I don't know if they do. I hear the tyres when I make the turn and just brake more so I don't lose traction. Don't know if I could consciously keep pushing the car when I hear the scream. Haha!

All good, I just wouldn't mind better handling and less body roll. Nothing you can do about that with your magic is there? Didn't think so. Lol!

So, an awesome mate is fixing up my B4, had a few problems, and now that he has fixed it, he is quite certain it'll beat the outback, even a tuned outback H6, in a race.

What do you guys think?

THe standard Outback tyres were never meant as a performance tyre. They are a soft walled 215/55-17 Geolander a tyre which pretty much excels at nothing. Changing to 18s and running a 235/45-18 road tyre will make a huge difference. As well as adding the front and rear sway bars replace the standard, and most likely torn lower control arm rear mount with a Nolethane or Whiteline item.

Thanks for that advice mate. I don't think I'll be putting 18s on it, as much as I'd like ot. Lol! I don't think I have the standard outback tyres, but a mate said they seem more luxury tyres than performance or whatever, by the tread pattern.

Oh well, will see how long I keep said outback for, since B4 should be ready by the weekend :)

If I do keep the outback, yeah, sway bars are a must

So yeah, it has been decided, since I now have to drive to work, that I'll be keeping the outback rather than the B4... so once the B4 sells, or even sooner, I'll start doing things to fix up the outback a little, such as the sway bars, maybe a mild exhaust for some noise, and I'd like some tail lights, to make the car stand out a little more. The wheels do a good job though :)
