Brain scratcher - low rpm vibration when in drive/stopped.

Postby cruisn » Wed Jan 09, 2013 5:31 pm

A few weeks ago my Gen2 Outback started to vibrate a little when in Drive but stopped, eg a set of lights.

Shift to Neutral and the vibration is gone.

Car idles smooth in both Park and Drive, no erratic movement of the tacho.

New leads, spark plugs.

No error codes.

New engine / trans mounts.

IACV and TPS both working perfectly, have tested with multimeter.

Car drives perfectly smooth and fuel consumption has not changed.

Transmission fully flushed and operation as normal.

Thoughts?

Any noise or vibration from the steering pump?

No abnormal noise. I'll disconnect belt and see if it makes a difference.

Also, approx 675 rpm in Drive and 750 rpm in Neutral. Within manufacturers specs

I think there is a air relief valve on to of the box possible need bleeding ?

Vibration was present before the trans was flushed and filled. Trans has 250K on it. Still smooth, but I fully service every s/h car I buy.

No difference after.

Mine did exactly this when I had an aftermarket driveshaft on the front driver side. Went away instantly when I swapped it back for a genuine shaft.

I know it probably isn't relevant to you but thought it write it anyways.

Won't be drive shafts if he is stopped. Would be different if getting the vibration while moving.

Converter maybe? Bearings or stator could be damaged?

Mine definitely had the vibration there when stopped.. Made no sense to me either.

Yeah that is weird. Especially because your drive shafts obviously arent turning while stopped.

Seems more than likely now after feedback from other forums and the fact that I have only recently changed the front driveshafts with aftermarket ones.

I'll swap back oem ones to front and see where it gets me.

Cheers

Fuck it......

Its gotta be auto trans related @250K as Ive checked everything else. So I have just bought a V5 STi 5 speed for it.

Fuck the auto, manual FTW.

Lol a full conversion. is 1. way to fix it. I still think it could be converter related.
