Outback for the wife

Hello, if there is any typos it's cos I'm nackered after my 12hr night shift 1 hour to go.
I am getting the wife her first Subaru it will be my 4th, I am obviously looking at an outback. Just wondering which engine is best for everyday use and can handle the occasional softroading & camping trips but nothing too remote. I may eventually get a boat/trailer so will need to be capable to tow it once in a blue moon.
Obviously the 3.0 will handle the weight of towing better but how does it stack up to the 2.5i? Should I go for low range?
I'm assuming the dimensions like ride height is exactly the same for all of the gen IV range. What else is the to know?
Cheers,
Craig

I would go the 3l for towing purposes. The 2.5 is alright but the extra power and torque from the 3l would be better. The ride height and suspension components are the same. Brakes are better on the 3l.

The 3.0L is what you'll be wanting Craig, automatic for the missus and enough power to tow

Yes fair enough, didn't expect bigger brakes but I guess with more power comes greater braking responsibility.

Yeah same as gt to non gt mate. The 3l has the same size brakes as the gt

The 2.5 would handle, especially with an auto, however it may be quite sluggish dependent on the size of the boat.
My recommendation would be the 3.0 for the extra torque, and regardless of your decision get an external ATF cooler fitted, if it doesn't have one already.

Yeah the 2.5 would only handle towing a boat on flat ground. I wouldn't try towing one up mooney mooney or mt white though. The auto trans would be good but there is only so much load it could take before over heating. As drops said get a remote ATF cooler fitted it will help.

The h6 and GT have bigger brakes for their power gains over the 2.0 and 2.5 variants.

I use my wife's 2.5 to tow the boat. I take it easy and it's fine.
I tow a 5m+ tinny with a hefty 40 four stroke with absolute ease. Clearly the 3.0L would be the pick, however the reality is you may only tow a few times a year and the 2.5 is up to the task.

At Craig,
Michael tows his rally car with 2.5 outback and says its great... Just use the dual range
The 3.0 will eat the fuel too
