07 Outback engine whirling sounds

Postby outbackH607 » Fri Sep 01, 2017 11:39 am

2007 Subaru Outback
3L H6 engine.

Warm or cold, idling or accelerating, there is a "whirling" sound coming from the engine bay. It does get slightly louder when I accelerate, and of course louder at high RPMs.

I've been doing some research online and some people have said it could be timing guides, power steering pump or even a front wheel bearing (which i think is wrong since the sound is clearly from the engine bay)

I havent had time to take it to Lucase Automotive to have a look yet - will try for next week.

Thanks

Hi, wheelbearings will only make noise while driving. Does it make the noise when vehicle stationary? I have only just this afternoon upgraded my noisy bearings in the idler and tensioner pulleys. Very easy job... took about 20min.

Below is a link to how it gets done.

I also have a noisy P/steer pump. Next job to sort.
