Change Manual Gear oil

Postby deeps » Fri May 28, 2010 12:39 am

Is it hard to change the manual gear oil on a MY07 Subaru Liberty 2.0R? Is there any how-to's or a workshop manual around?

What is the most recommended brand and viscosity, and how much will I need?

Also, with the diff's, are they hard to change the fluids on and how much will I need there?

I want to change all the fluids in my vehicle, and have not changed diff fluids before (have owned FWD's only prior)

I'd steer clear of caltex... it chewed my box.

I run Castrol VMX - 80 and it does the job :)

Castrol is the typical filll used by dealers. Multitrax as a standard fill or Syntrax as premium fill.

75W/90. 4L for the transmission. 1L for the rear diff.

You'll need to buy a T70 torx bit for the transmission. Change the crush washer(s) for the transmission. Also use thread sealer on the diff plug or you may get leaks like I did. (Don't use PTFE tape as that messes with the torque setting).

All easy to do at home with only a jack and stands.

Just had a look at the oil via the dipstick, and it's still quite clear... Does mtx oil change colour/go bad visibly? I remember reading that it always looks the same?

Manual gear oil hardly changes colour unless you burn it. It's not like engine oil where it picks up all the contaminants from combustion.

I agree with you this is really difficult to change oil manual. I'm not prefer to change oil by manually. If you have any easy idea to change oil manually then kindly keep update.

thanks !

Picking up this old thread, because my searches for "gearbox oil" probably got too many hits, and google landed me here from the outside world...

Considering the Penrite semi-synth and full-synth options (for Outback 2.5i 5MT). I don't mind springing for the full-synth, but the semi-synth seems to be 'recommended' by Penrite in their selector app thing?

Any experiences people might like to contribute (in addition to the older posts above)?
