Accident in my 05 Liberty GT, need advise and parts info

Postby cadud2000 » Sat Apr 03, 2010 4:01 pm

Hey everyone, had a bit of an accident last night in my 2005 Lib GT sedan, just got a few questions. I clipped a curb and bent the front left wheel back into the wheel arch. would the parts i need to replace be the same parts as a standard liberty or are they specific to the GT. see below pic. what components make up the front left wheel. i am trying to find every part used there so i can make a list and replace everything. if anyone knows please let me no asap. cheers

Hey Josh sorry to hear mate.

Your best bet is to have the car inspected by someone such as Pedders who offer a multi-point check for around $30.00. Then you aren't replacing parts which may not be required. At a guess I would expect the following which is a worst case:

Control arm
Strut. strut top, & possibly the spring
2 x Lower control arm bushes
ABS sensor/tonewheel (maybe)
Tie rod end
LHS driveshaft
Wheel bearing + possibly the hub
Wheel (if it is buckled). Your tyre is flat so need a new pair so you have matching pairs on that axle.

If yours isn't a spec B then it's the same parts as any other 4th gen liberty (except your brake rotors, calipers, mount, and hoses are different to the 2.5i and 2.0R)

thanks man. you dont even want to no what happened to the rim. the rim is a throw away now. it has a hole punched through it thats like 5 cm long and 2 cm across. along the flat side of the rim that the wheel drives on. near the air filler nozzle thing. ill take a pic and show you. i have never seen damage like this done to a rim. I thought the whole rim would shatter before being able to punch a whole through it.

I just tried to take a photo of the rim but unfortunatly at the moment the car is at the bottom of my drive way where the tow truck dropped it off and the tyre has rolled its self back onto the rim and cannot get to the rim to take a photo yet.

With the pedders check is there anyone similar that i could get to come out to my house to check out the car. Me and my dad are going to fix it our self and my mates dad 2 doors down the road is a mechanic so we are going to do what we can and get him to do the rest. but need someone to inspect it first. but the car cannot be driven.

Does anyone no any subaru wreckers in South east Victoria. Im after as many as you guys no as im going to need to try find quite a few parts. or does someone no where i can buy these parts new without havin to pay top prices from subaru.

This might seem cheesy but how about Lubemobile or similar service mobile mechanics?

Some items will be really obvious that they're out of shape or broken, others may not be as obvious and you won't know until you're back on the road and the car is not tracking straight, or you have noises etc. Best to replace the obvious ones so the car is driveable, then get the car asap into a workshop for the proper checks and onto a wheel alignment rig etc.

It's probably a testament to the strength of factory wheels that you would have a hole before the whole wheel disintegrates. The latter would have left the rest of your car in much worse shape if the chassis hits the ground on one corner ;)

i think im going to be safer just replacing the whole front left side. where is a good place to biuy aftermarket parts like tie rod end, control arms and all that kind of stuff.

also what did you mean by tonewheel? what is that?

I would be getting all the chassis mounts checked before bolting the new parts in, if any of the mounts have moved due to the impact, your wheel geometry will be all over the place…………….. Not exactly safe

+1. Trying to save money is one thing, but save the most money once you know what you're working with. i.e. get it professionally checked with the list of parts, then do the work yourself.

For what it's worth, and a long shot due to not being able to be driven, but any chance can you get it to a Subi dealer? They'll be able to get it up on a hoist and then no doubt give you the list of the all the part no.'s?

Good luck.

Tell me to bugger off if you don't want to answer, but can I ask what were you doing before hitting the kerb did to get such damage?

i was in rowville on halsbury drive and there is a really sharp bend near the drains and i was followiong my 2 mates in there cars and they went round the corner, and as i went to go around some moron in a white ve commodore cut the corner and i swerved to miss him and there is a road going off to the left half way round the corner. so i swerved into the end of the street and swerved back around to the right to miss hittin the holden and clipped the curb on the edge of the side street if that makes sense.

and yeah mis judged it slightly and clipped the curb. was just unlucky but wouldnt have happened if that holden hadnt come across onto my side of the road.

I appreciate what you wrote, and unfortunatly it cant be driven which makes it harder. But spoke to my mechanic today and he is going to come out and have a look at it and give me a full list of parts that he thinks we need to replace and we will do what we can and he will check the mounts and all the important stuff. And once we can get it fixed enough to drive. Im gunna drop it off at his workshop 2 doors down the street from my house and he will finish it off, and then get wheel alingment and anything he thinks it will need.

But between now and then if i can manage to find a way to get it 2 doors down the street to my mechanic i will just pay him to do the lot. At least that way i no its done properly. would be a shame if i fixed it and was driving down the road and my wheel feel off or something like that. Plus since the accident there is a strange noise coming from the motor which worries me. So need to get him to check that out as well.

But I wnt out today looking for a Workshop manual for a 2005 Lib GT but was told by the owner of ferntree gully autobahn that they done make one and he checked the website from where he orders them from, and there was none listed.

Does anyone no where i can buy a workshop manual? or if i cant find one, and someone here has one. Id be happy to pay to get the whole thing photo copied and would be happy with a photo copy of it. thanks for your help though, its appreciated.

I bought the workshop manual on CD from ebay - it was only $12 or something...

Good luck with getting it fixed. So you are not going to do an insurance claim? I reckon all those part would add up...

The workshop manual is being hosted by Clarence on this website. Not sure if this is the whole thing or not but have a look there.

thanks all. I have saved a copy of the workshop manual but i hate reading from the computer. really trying to find a hard back copy of it. anyone got any ideas?

I wish i could claim on insurance. I had been out of work past 4 months and only been working again for 3 weeks. And coz i was out of work i had to cancel my insurance. and I was meant to call them the day b4 the accident but got home to late in the afternoon. and was closed for the long weekend.

Just bad luck i guess. So this is going to be an expensive month for me. But the love of the liberty still goes strong
