Fiberglassing? Yes or No (Subwoofer Boxes)

Hey everyone,

As the title states, Im after some info on fiberglassing.
Has anyone used it to make custom subwoofer boxes for their libertys? (Preferably generation three)
Im very keen to start and I have a basic idea of where to begin, I just don't want to take the plunge
until I get some real advice from someone who has done it before... I have only used fiberglass to fix surfboards/surf ski's
never anything big like a subwoofer box.

Im worried about the weight of the subwoofer on the Fiberglass (how many layers would I need)
also, what kind of product to buy and is this really the best option?

Other then fiberglass, I am pretty handy with timber and I have a few resources available to me, but I am apprehensive about doing it this way
because I really want them to fit snuggly, and the angles and corners in the boot make this difficult.

Any information into fiberglassing, or into any custom boot modifications anyone has made, I would love to hear some.

Jacob
(Used search, but couldn't find anything substantial... Sorry if I missed something.)

Looks pretty informative. Good luck, it's something I've always wanted to try.

If you are handy with the wood work you could make a suitable frame and then cover it with t-shirt type material and then glass over that. I've seen it done for kayak storage containers etc and they are as sturdy as it can get. With the fibreglassing I have done (a couple of grills etc) it doesn't take too many layers to make it feel strong, with a frame added it would be bomb proof. It will weigh a lot though.

I have a custom box made out of mdf thats coated in carpet that matches the boot colour (Came with the car). It tucks away nicely up in the back right hand corner of my boot - Its meant for a 12"sub. I'll post some pictures up if you want for ideas of shapes etc?

That would be great mate, Im just trying to get my head around some shapes and designs at this stage.
At the moment, Im probably going to make the base and back of the box out of MDF and the circular spacer aswell.. then cover it in fleece to
glass over. but yes any pictures would be great.

Here is my sub box:

It fits in there nice and tight and doesnt need to be tied down because its pretty snug and there is still a stack of room in the boot too.

Man... that is effing sweet! Did u do it yourself? Looks great. Exactly what I wanted too - neat sub install rear firing while still retaining access to the ski port. Love it! :clapping:

Thank Avon, I didn't make it it came with the car but it was made by a professional (his mate made sub boxes for a living). Im going to mount the sub opposite it (Keep the ski port open) and keep with the hidden stealth look. All you should be able to see when im done will be the amp and the sub no wiring!

Mate thats great, thanks alot for the pictures.
If I could get something else off you, could I grab the dimensions of the box itself? My idea at the moment, is to make the boxy shape out of wood, and the make the circular piece and then cover all of it in fiberglass. So that it comes out in much the same way that yours does (IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE... Hard to explain)

Dimensions meaning, the size of the base, size of the back, size of the sides... Just the flat bits... IF thats not to much trouble.

Ok, now I know this isn't a link to a sub box but it essentially shows what you are trying to achieve and how to do it (with lots of pictures). Obviously you'd have to take on board what you can and then adapt the rest for the sub box principles.

Hope it's a helpful link.

Thats cool - I'll see what I can do in paint so its easier to understand and hopefully will make more sense.
