Car stands.

Ok, I've always just used the ever trusty trolley jack when required to get under the car or do things that require a lift. I've considered getting some car stands for some time and with a day on the tools planned at my place tomorrow think I might grab a set so we can have the entire fron/rear end up in one go. That way we can get everyone busy and both struts done at one time.

Questions are:

What's a good weight rating to get, obviously the higher the better but I'd imagine there would be a point for overkill?

Are the units at Stupid Cheap just as good as any others given they should be compliant?

What points on the car do you use to hold it up - yeah, a gumby question to some but hey, I've never used them before.

Wow, I guess you like living dangerously. You should NEVER get under a car only held up by a trolley jack!

A Liberty weighs around 1500 kg. You'd normally only have a quarter of this supported by each stand, but could get up to half if you placed the stand closer to the middle of the car. Anythiing rated over 1500kg should eb more than ample.

The type which have a ratchet on the height adjust are much easier to use, but I can't see any on the Supercheap website right now.

I've had the cheapies from Supercheap for like 10 years and they are fine. From memory they are either 1.0 or 1.5tonne rating and they are the type with a sliding pin. Like Ric said most times they are only holding around 500kg or so each. Shit they are only around $40 for the pair I would not be risking my life without them. I also have fold-up chocks which I put under the opposite wheels to prevent the car rolling.

I usually just sit them under the where the normal tyre jacking points are (lower the car GENTLY onto the stands).

Ok, so maybe I didn't type that as I should have. No, I am not an idiot on a death wish. By "under the car" I don't actually mean I am jacking the car up supported in the air by only the jack and then sliding under the car, I was trying to short cut my thread. Let me type it out a little clearer to ease the minds of everyone. If I have had a need to remove a wheel on my car in the past I have jacked it up with a trolley jack, removed said wheel and then placed the wheel under the chassis area of the car in case the jack failed for whatever reason. Then I proceeded to work on said wheel until job was done.

Now read my first post and take into account I have some sense of longevity about my life and don't think I am of the class to be entered into the darwin awards.

I'll check my local stupid cheap on the way home tonight - standard mounting areas as per the owners guide or are there better points?

*edit: Thanks for the responses too, I was leading to whether ratchet types were far superior etc. Will just go with what is there.

The $35 jobs at "Stupidcheap" will easily do the job.

Besides being able to support more weight (which in your case doesnt matter) the only benifit I see in the more expensive sets is they may last abit longer. But for something you will probably only use a couple times a year I think the standard ones will last a while.
