Bet this question hasn't come up before... stoned disc

From the 'How the Hell?!" files...

I have a stone inside the disc rotor on my right front. It's right inside near the hub, between the two discs, and can't get out because it's too big to fall through the vanes. It is loose enough to rattle around until speed gets over about 10 when centripedal force hold it in place.

How the hell do I get it out short of pulling the disk rotor off?! (Bonus question for extra credit - how the hell did it get in there?!) I doubt it can do any damage as it only rattles at low speed but it's bloody annoying! We tried pulling it out with a looped bit of wire but couldn't pull it through... it just doesn't seem it will come out.

Brainstorming (without beer) we came up with some other suggestions including;
* Ultrasonics to fracture it (kidney stones!)
* Hold it in place with wire and try to break it up with a long drill bit
* Acid (?! Yeah that wasn't me suggesting the acid)

Anyone else got any suggestions?

edit: I have a beer now lets see what else I can think up.

Here's one I prepared earier ( or hotlinked off teh interwebs)

If you imagine the stone is near the hub, in the inner section where the bolt holes are... it will sit at the bottom, then as the wheel turns, go up the side, until it falls out of where it is sitting back to the bottom of the inner section.

Klink! Klink! Klink!

disc

i think it would be easier to just pull the rotor off rather than stuffing around with the other options. im preety sure all you gotta do is take the wheel off and unbolt the caliper (2 bolts) then pull the rotor off the hub and then let the stone fall out, if it doesnt just fall out itll atleast be easier to work with. it should only be a 20min job if that.

get a bicycle spoke and try to lift it out...

bicycle spokes are great for lots of things.

I just checked the doco - you're right, it's just two the bolts to remove the caliper and that's it...

Sound like a plan.

to the OP: did you ever get the rock out?

i think i may have the same problem, whenever i'm driving and i turn right, theres alot of squealing noises cominf from the front left wheel. annoying as hell but i havent taken off the wheel to check what it is exactly.
