I have been running an absolutely generic HID Kit in my MY05 Liberty for the past 18 months & nearly 20,000KM with out a single issue. As has been stated many times previously in this thread, a properly insulated and isolated circuit will not have any issues. You would require a much higher level of intereference (IMHO) to have any noticeable effect!

When did the Liberty's go to a 32 bit ECU ? I assumed this was inline with their introduction WRX/STI's in the MY06. This is of course different to the US where they had a 32 bit ECU much earlier. What I'm getting at is I really don't think that CAN would have been running even between the various control modules on the older slower 16 bit versions.
I could be completely wrong of course

Precisely why I "assumed" my 04 is NOT CAN.

I am also informed by a very well known and respected tuner/engine builder that non CAN vehicles have green connectors just like my 04.

This same respected tuner/engine builder informs me that 04-07 Forresters with DBW and 06-07 Sti's with DBW are non CAN vehicles also.

The general consensus on Romraider from one of the Administrators (Merchgod) is 06 onwards Liberty's are CAN.

Still happy to be corrected though. :)

The 2004 Legacy Workshop Manual shows THREE CAN busses connected to the BIU (Body Integrated Unit). One high speed, and two low speed.

The high speed bus connects to the TCM (auto transmission), ABS, VDC, ECM, and steering angle sensor.

One low speed bus connects to the combination meter, and either the clock/info display or the Navi system

The second low speed bus connects to the aircon.

Neither the 2004, nor the 2005 manuals show any CAN signals on the OBD connector. I think this is what those tuners are referring to. Not if the car uses CAN, just if it is available at the OBD connector.

The USDM Legacy manual is floating around a few websites. Haven't seen any AuDM manuals online though

Guys,

Many of you have indicated that the Liberty's have CAN Bus systems. Some have indicated that twisted pair cables reduce the potential interference, etc, and all of these elements are reasonable assertions.

My main concern is the quality of the isolation and filtering in the imported HID ballast units. No vehicle is completely imune to noise interference, just drive under some tram lines with the AM radio on, or activate the door locks while listening to the AM radio and you may appreciate my concern.

I love those CRO pictures, takes me back to my trade school days! But they serve to remind us that all frequencies are not equal to all filters and all voltages are not equal to all isolation units.

So, I still hold my concerns for the quality of the cheaper HID ballast units and reiterate that some levels of interference you will never know about, you cannot see and you cannot trace on the CRO (due to its own limitations).

As I paid for a five star vehicle with lots of safety features, I do not want to find these are degraded when they are needed most.

I am not saying that I will not fit HIDs, just that I will pay for a reputable brand with high quality components to ensure that I have the right level of filtering and isolation as a sort of insurance premium against potentially and inadvertantly degrading the safety aspects of my precious vehicle.

I will probably choose the Philips HID Kit from the Australian Distributor.

Kind Regards,

Mark.
