Left Indicator coming on when Braking

I've recently purchased a 2005 subaru liberty wagon, I notice that when I press the brake pedal the left indicators come on while the brake pedal is pressed. I don't think this occurred when I test drove it. Anyone have this issue before or could suggest what to check?
I've pulled the rear brake left brake light bulb out, it still happens, swapped the bulb with the right brake light, still happens. I've tried earthing the brake light elsewhere, still happens.
I'm not sure when cleaning the car, there's moisture around the indicator stalk or elsewhere?
