Door lock actuators

Postby Dazed and Confused » Mon Dec 30, 2019 11:05 pm

Hi All. My daughter has just bought an 05 liberty. On both front doors they won't lock or unlock with the remote. I've done heaps of research, and found out that this seems to be a common problem. I looked around to see how to fix it, and found teK's awesome DIY repair job from 2010 on here. But I think that I might just replace the whole units. I found that the price for genuine replacements was an eye watering 285 bucks each! So I looked around some more, and as you would you expect, I found non-genuine parts for a fraction of the price. I've had one of the actuators out, and saw that the external door handle mechanism is different to the one that teK's tutorial showed. His mechanism featured a cable operated external door handle, whereas the ones on the daughter's car are operated by a rod. I saw that the lock actuator mechanism is actually two pieces that come apart once you remove a single small screw. My question is, are the actuator motor housings compatible with both types of the external door handle setups? That is, will the rod type setup I already have attach to the new actuator housing? I've looked around online, and found heaps of photos, but I can't find anything that says for sure, whether the actuator motor housings are compatible with both types of door handle setup, or they different altogether? If anybody can help me with this, your help would be very much appreciated. Thanks., Simon.

I’d say all the procedures info you require is in your cars FSM.
And the parts info eg on opposed forces or partsouq via vin.

I’d hit up a self serve wreckers for cheap actuators and buy a few for spares.
Parts/FSM link in my signature covers all you need to know.

Iirc all libs have cables to the inside door release, and rods to the outside handle.
I’ve certainly done a rear door, refurbed the actuator and got it all working.

Do post if you’re struggling and I’ll dig up the FSM & parts info for you.

Hi Ben, thanks for the intel. Great idea sourcing second hand actuators from the wreckers. My only concern would be how long they would last. Especially if this issue is a common problem. I think that I'll go ahead and order the new non - genuine parts from the states, and take my chances. I'll let you know how things turn out.

My GT-b is 270klm old, actuators work fine.
Same deal for our 2.5i, bar one that got replaced.

I think it’s more of a small sample out of 1000’s of units that will fail.
Around $30 each from the self serve wreckers.

Just don’t buy any with split or repaired cases :P

Iirc Partsouq is a Gulf State, UAE business...
