Pump the tyres up to 38psi and get the wheel alignment checked/adjusted?

Yeah we have them at 33 psi now. I don't want to wear the middle tread too much, but I will give that a go. Alignment was done when the tyres were fitted.

Never seen any Subaru wear the centre of the tyres. I run 38-40 in the front 4psi less in the rear and mine wears the edges. Alignment is spot on.

Out of curiosity, what was your wife driving before the Subaru?

I never run my tyres below 36psi (unless I'm on the track in my GT-R). Mostly they're 37-38psi (40psi in winter). Never had inner wear out (that's probably from 70's and 80's tyre tech)
