Tow Bar Gen4 Outback Wagon and Sedan Interchangeable

Postby brucey1 » Thu Mar 24, 2016 5:42 pm

Have a Liberty sedan 2004 gen 4. Want to confirm if the tow bar from an Outback wagon will fit? I called up a couple of wreckers and they reckon they are not interchangeable, or the tow bar from the wagon will sit up too high. But looking at the Hayman Reese tow bar catalogue the sedan and the wagon have the same part number.

No.
Subaru Australia tow bars for Wagon and Sedan are different.

Cannot comment on Hayman Reece bars though

Maybe the two only differ in the tongue (Im assuming your talking the 50mm hitch type), as this is really what sets the towball height.
If the same part number is shown for sedan and wagon then one could assume the rear body structure is the same.

IIRC OEM Subaru bars are made up in three pieces, one piece each that slides into the chassis plus the section that runs behind the bumper; Hayman Reese are one piece. With both you loose the OEM bumper reinforcing bar in place of the towbar.

On the Subaru Gen4 Wagon tow bar (at least) the Aluminium Box Section that runs behind the bumper is retained. The Wagon's OEM bumper Reinforcement bolts back into place between the pieces you describe that slides into the chassis. I fitted a genuine Subaru bumper to my Spec-B Wagon shortly after I bought it.

So it does!

I fitted my Hayman Reese so I should know better.... I must have been thinking of the brackets that secure it to the body.
