Fluids and Oils? What should I use? Help please!

Postby jayz137 » Fri Mar 18, 2016 5:36 pm

Hi guys, new to cars and need some help!
I'm about to change all of my oils, like brake fluids, transmission fluid, differential oils (how and where?) and if theres anything I missed out please point out

So yea the big question is what should I use? I currently have 175kms in my 2004 2.5 N/A. I just recently changed engine oil but what should I use next time? 5w-40 or 10w-40?

Thanks guys! All replies would be appreciated!!!

P.S. I have the tools and got a hoist.

Lubricants are a very emotional area and will bring out a lot of personal recommendations.
From the Recommended Materials list in the Gen4 FSM 5W30 is recommended, however 10w30 and 10w40 are acceptable.

Use a good quality synthetic oil.
If you wanted to use a 40 weight oil, viscosity grade 10W40 would be acceptable, for Australian conditions where you will not see minus20C temperaturez.
However, you are more likely to find the good quality synthetics in 5W40.

Right, thanks for that! I've been told the thicker the oil the engine won't wear fast. So they said go 10? I'm not sure sorry I'm hopeless. Haha
But what about those brake fluids? diff and trans oil? I want to do everything at the same time. One time big time job.

How many kms on engine? The older the engine, the more wear it suffers.
I found that I was using oil when I used 10w40, so the following change I used 10w50 Penrite (as recommended by my mechanic)

Oil usage seems to have stopped, so I'll stick with that for now

So its got 175,000 kms atm. It still drives fine, I just want to change it for maintenance and I just got the car so I want to start my own history servicing it.
