MY07 Liberty STI wiring problem

Postby StuC » Wed Jan 13, 2016 7:04 pm

Hi all, doing some digging for my old man as he is having trouble with his Liberty STI with Macintosh system, no GPS/SATNAV.
It keeps popping the 20AMP aux/backup circuit fuse in the engine bay. When it goes it is taking out the radio, radio surround illumination, front door courtesy lights, dome light, boot light, central locking remote sensor and it appears the engine immobiliser also stops working (eeek!!!) Unfortunately it isnt a constant thing - it will go months no worries and then pop a fuse every 2 minutes.

To me it sounds like a short to ground from a rubbed through loom somewhere. He has just had it at Subaru and Lucas automotive and they even got a sparky out to look over it but no joy as yet. They tried disconnecting the amp and HU and it was still popping fuses. As above, sounds like a short to ground so, im sure someone has come across this before. On all the forums i have browsed no one seems to have had this problem before, which i find hard to believe.

i dont really feel like pulling the dash and chasing looms etc but if someone has come across this before please shout out!! Things to note: second owner, no flood damage or crash damage, 100% as they came out of the factory.

Cheers,
Stu

My 2004 Gen4 manual says that fuse 8 supplies MB-29 plus FB-10 and FB-11

MB-29 is the circuit for
Alarm control module
Auto A/C control module
Body integrated unit
Interior light
Spot map light

FB-10 is the circuit for
Audio
Clock
Keyless entry control module
Navigation unit
Step light LH
Step light RH
TV monitor

FB-11 is the circuit for
Luggage room light (Wagon model)
Trunk room light (Sedan model)
Seat belt buzzer

I would get a wiring diagram, start isolating circuit by circuit and start using a Megger meter to find which line is weak ground resistance. Would not want to go higher than 500V though.

Hey everyone, thought i'd update this since it is now fixed. I went over wiring diagrams and thought it would be narrowed down to the BCM itself being fried and would be a dash out job to start the chase. So with this in mind and nowhere to leave the car pulled apart my old man sent it back to the autosparky.
Turns out someone in the factory had accidentally put a screw through the dome light loom and over time it had worn through. So after all the fuss it was a bloody simple and cheap fix.
