Low Beam & High Beam

Postby 2004GT238 » Fri Dec 18, 2015 7:55 pm

For all the Gen4 owners...is it just my car or is it normal for the low beam to switch on when you activate high beams (I.e when you flash someone during the day).

I've assumed only the high beams will activate when your intentions are to 'flash' someone.

Can anyone confirm this?

Cheers people!

Both High Beam and Low Beam are powered by Head Light Relay
Headlight Relay LH for the LH lights and (funny enough) Headlight Relay RH for the RH lights.

When the lights are ON, both Low Beam and High Beam Bulbs receive 12V power.
Low beam come on immediately as they are earthed.
High Beam earthing is controlled by the Dimmer and Passing Switch Stalk.

Put the lights on, and Low Beams illuminate.
Put the Stalk on High Beam and then High Beams are also earthed and now both Low Beam and High Beam will be illuminated.

When the head lights are flashed (e.g. when you flash someone during the day) the Dimmer Stalk will activate the headlight relays and also earth the High Beam Bulbs.
So, following the above explanation for the normal Low/High Beam circuit, Yes, its is normal low beam to switch on when you activate high beams.
