For one second I thought it was an Forrester Box from around 1996 but the number is wrong.. I know that 1996 Forrester with 1.447:1 reduction gear was TY752XH1AA.. sorry I'm not much of help. But only one thing is for sure its AWD box from EJ series.
Cheers"

3.9 is a 39 tooth Crown Wheel and a 10 tooth pinion gear
4.111 is a 37 tooth Crown Wheel and a 9 tooth pinion gear
So Both Crown Wheel and Pinion need to be changed.

The pinion gear is threaded though the centre of the Driven shaft.
The complete drive pinion shaft assembly needs to be removed from the gearbox.
Sounds big to me?

Look at the manuals you have been directed to. Cheers!

looks like alot of work, never split a box before.

i have found a 4.111 diff on gumtree, i might just get my car up on the ramps and drop the gearbox and check what ratio it is. if its 3.9 or anything other then 4.111 i will get a diff to suit the new box.

would a rear diff out of a 2010 impreza fit? are the CV shafts the same? the one im looking at is pretty cheap and only has ~60,000km on it and looks like new with warranty. not sure if it will fit tho, states on the listing it will fit a 96 forester but only 2003+ liberty, is that because of the ratio or is it due to the way the cv's connect?

i know a lot of stuff on Subaru's are interchangeable but not sure what the limits are...
