96 Liberty Gearbox question

Postby mike16889 » Tue Dec 01, 2015 6:14 pm

hi, im new to the world of Subaru.

i recently bought a 96 awd manual wagon for cheap due to gearbox noise and slipping clutch, i have found a cheap gearbox to replace the current one but am having issues seeing if it will work, if the ratio is the same. I have been trying to look up the transmission codes for the 2 boxes but as with every thing in Aus car related, they do not exist. can any one shed some light please?

old one in car: ty752xgbaa

new one picked up cheap: ty752xh1aa

thanks for the reply, first link won't load...

my old ones a duel range aswell. are all the duel range boxes the same ratio? i don't want to put in the box and have the centre diff bind due to different ratios.

Try a Google search on TransmissionIDChart_Public.pdf
That's how I located it for you.
Anyway, both these transmission codes are not listed on this document.
Cheers!

Also this for ty752xh1aa
http://www.ausubaru.com/forum/archive/i ... 10045.html
and this for ty752xgbaa
http://www.ausubaru.com/forum/archive/i ... -4311.html
These are the only meaningful links that turn up on a code search.

Still can't get it up like that either. Maybe an issue with my internet?

Seems like the exact same thing with the other charts I looked at. No listing at all. Not even for the part that seems to be for ratio (xg/xh) I think that's the ratio part.

The "X" in ty752xh1aa and in ty752xgbaa stand for Dual Range.

If the dual range reduction ration is slightly different, then this should not matter for a replacement.
The reduction is on the input and will affect the total gearbox equally.

The issue will be the final drive ratio.
The ty752xh1aa was stated to come from a Forester (in one of the links provided to you, above)
Should this be true, then according to my Factory Workshop Manual library, an early model 2.0litre N/A Forester had a 1.447 low range reduction gearing and a 4.111 final drive ratio.
Also the transfer reduction gearing was 1.000 (or 1.0 to 1.0, with no reduction)

Your mission is to determine
(a) whether this is true for the ty752xh1aa gearbox and what is the story for the original ty752xgbaa?
(b) what is the final drive ratio in your present vehicle.

Here I will apologise upfront. I am an Engineer and I will expect that everyone else will keep up with me.

If your present vehicle is still rolling, here is what you could do.
You need about 3 metres of clear level ground.
With all four wheels on the ground, and with the car in neutral mark a 12 O'clock position on both front tyres. Use a white paint marking pen or the like.
Under the car, mark a position on the tail shaft with the white paint pen (This may be easier said than done, you may need to remove heat shields and the like and find a suitable visible position to make the mark)
Roll the car (backward or forward) in a straight line until the front tyres have rotated through one full revolution and the paint mark is back at the 12 O'clock position.
While rolling the car, have an accomplice monitor the number of revolutions of the tail shaft.
Almost forgot to add, do not run over your accomplice in the process!
The available Subaru ratios are
3.700 (highly unlikely) The tailshaft will have rotated through closes to, but under, 3 and 3/4 revolutions
3.900 (unlikely but possible) The tailshaft will have rotated through closes to, but under, 4 revolutions
4.111 (likely) The tailshaft will have rotated through between 4 to 4 and 1/4 revolutions
4.444 (unlikely) The tailshaft will have rotated through more than 4 and 1/4 revolutions and just short of 4 and 1/2 revolutions.

This should allow you to determine your final drive ratio.

Go here to where a link to a 1995 Liberty Factory Workshop Manual is identified.
viewtopic.php?f=45&t=31478
Within this data should also be what is within your present car?

Once you have determined that it is compatible (the same) as that of the replacement box, you may be good to go!

thanks for the instructions, might have to mount a gopro or something near the rear diff and then play the footage back to count as there is no way anyone will be able to look under while i move it.

i will use the same way to check the new box aswell, ill mark the front diff output shafts and force both around at same time in same direction for one turn and see how many times the rear shaft turns.

*EDIT

some duct tape rapped around the tailshaft may do the job, ill just tape the tape to itself at the bottom point so it sticks out.

just checked the new box, output shaft turns 4 times for 1 full turn of front cv shafts, so seems like it is definitely 4.111, just have to find some way of doing it for the one in the car...

4.111 sound the MOST logical ratio for that vintage

Looking at the FSM u linked to, it states its 3.9 unless its an outback which is 4.111 but those manuals usually only list the USA spec ones. Mines not an outback just a ski-fx pack one.

Maybe time to check again to determine if its just uner 4 turns (3.9) of just over 4 turns (4.111)
one is 36 degrees under and the other is 40 degrees over.

If the substitute DID come from a forester, then it WILL BE 4.111
