Rear diff - MY04 2.5i mt liberty wagon

Postby mattyj » Wed Oct 21, 2015 11:50 am

Somewhat recently, ye old(e) mechanics told us that rear diff bearings need replacing. Being poor, and a little bit Un-skilled in the cars department...

Has anyone NEEDED to replace the rear diff bearings themselves, and opted for a replacement unit instead of taking off the original and replacing the bearings? And has anyone from that group tackled it themselves to save cash? I have friend with tools&skillz, but am hoping against 3k quote from the mechanics (and hoping no-one buys it, as wifey has had enough lost money into the vehicle....which I not-so-secretly want to keep), also worth noting that the part from ONBOOST is 250.00

Thanking you all for your intelligent suggestions.

You or the mechanic? LOL

Seriously, what symptom is giving rise to the diagnosis?
A constant bearing rumble is generally wheel bearings.
Diff bearings generally, when failing, cause a whine under drive or a whine in over run, depending upon which direction the bearing is allowing excess play.

NOTE: Since noises from engine, muffler, transmission, propeller shaft, wheel bearings, tires, and body are sometimes mistaken for noises from differential assembly, be careful in checking them.
Inspection methods to locate noises include coasting, accelerating, cruising, and jacking-up all four wheels. Perform these inspections according to the condition of trouble.
When listening to noises, shift gears into four wheel drive and fourth speed position, trying to pick up only differential noise.
