Engine build!!

Postby Jake.h71 » Wed Jul 15, 2015 9:24 pm

Hey everyone,
Wasn't too sure where to post this so looks like this will do haha.
As of Friday the engine of my 2004 lib gt has a ferocious knock, suspected spun bearing. The plan is to purchase a secondhand motor, swap em over and rebuild the original. Has anyone pulled down an ej20 and done a proper full rebuild with aftermarket internals? Not too sure what the best approach is but was planning on forged internals, would such modification prevent such issues happening again in the future?
I've heard heaps of stories of spun bearings in Subbie boxers but only thought it was due to not breaking the new motor in enough, looks like at 200,000k's it's just as likely to happen lol.
Thanks in advance for any help and info provided

Cheers
Jake

What I would do is find a other 2004 ej20t and give the rebuild a try on that first.

Here is one with a knock from a wrx starting at $150:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ej20-turbo-2 ... 25a9d411a6

Then once you give it a go, you could have a second chance with yours if anything goes wrong with the rebuild.

Would be a great project to have. Look at it as an opportunity to do it yourself. I hope you have another form of transport for now.

Not worth it

Either grab a new ej207 shortblock (version 7 forged piston complete from Subaru) and slap your stock reco heads on

Or ej257 bottom end same as above

Or complete ej257 08 onward Sti long block (block and heads) with dual avcs

Or grb EJ207 long block

Pricing for the above complete drive in drive out would be roughly $5.5-6k for each unless you save yourself money on 1 and 2 with non reco'd heads (take 6-800 off if you don't want to reco them which is not something id recommend)

Good luck

Thanks guys there's a lot to consider
Mick, what's the difference between the ej20t I have and an ej207? As in block wise? As you stated the internals are different but is anything else?

Its beyond the scope of this thread

Google is your friend

To help you out - your motor is not an ej20t. Ej20t is a generic name for all turbo 2.0 litre Subaru boxer engines

Yours is an ej20x/y (x auto y is manual). Quad avcs (variable valve timing on all four cams), 9.5:1 compression, forged pistons, open deck block, forged rods and crank

Ej207 has different variants so google for that

From what I've read the only difference between an ej20 and ej207 is forged internals. Is this correct?

Incorrect

Too many things to list here but keep reading

Basically block, crank, rods, pistons, heads, cams, configuration of cams / valve timing, ports, combustion chambers - everything is different.

Type in "ej207 info thread - nasioc" into google and start reading

The info is on this forum if you want to look also

Just coming up to 200k kms. Running E85. So short change intervals and oil selection are a little more important.

Does anyone know what is the exact cause of ej20s spinning bearings?
